Job description

Senior Software Engineer

Hypertherm Associates is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our dynamic team in Kent, Washington!

The Senior Software Engineer will play a critical hands-on role in designing, developing, debugging, and supporting system-level software that directly interacts with production machines. This role focuses on solving complex software problems, modernizing legacy systems, and ensuring reliable operation across a mixed technology stack, including C#, C, and Delphi on Windows-based platforms.

Working closely with technicians, testers, firmware engineers, and other software engineers, you will diagnose issues that span software, firmware, and machine behavior while building your understanding of the firmware layer over time.

The ideal candidate brings strong software engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the flexibility to contribute across the codebase, making practical decisions that balance quality, speed, and maintainability.

As our Senior Software Engineer, you will:

  • Design, develop, test, and support software that controls and interacts with production machines

  • Troubleshoot complex software and machine behavior issues while learning how firmware interfaces impact system performance

  • Modernize and maintain legacy applications while improving reliability, performance, and maintainability

  • Collaborate with technicians, testers, firmware engineers, and cross-functional partners to diagnose issues and deliver practical solutions

  • Learn and apply firmware concepts as needed to support integration, debugging, and machine-level problem solving

  • Contribute to software architecture discussions and make recommendations that support scalable, reliable product development

  • Participate in code reviews, peer feedback, and continuous improvement of development practices

  • Support product releases by helping estimate work, manage priorities, and deliver high-quality software on schedule

Who you are and the experience you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, with 4+ years of software development experience

  • Strong programming background with experience writing production-quality code in C#, C, C++, or similar languages

  • Working knowledge of communication protocols such as EtherCAT, Modbus, MQTT, or similar, or the ability to learn them

  • Experience developing software for systems that interact with hardware, machines, devices, or similar technical environments

  • Interest in learning firmware, embedded systems, or RTOS concepts to support software integration and troubleshooting

  • Demonstrated experience with software development lifecycle management, defect tracking tools, and peer review

  • Ability to quickly and effectively convey technical and complex ideas

  • Excellent time management and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred experience that differentiates you:

  • Machine tools, tool pathing, robotics, firmware, embedded systems, or software that controls machinery/hardware

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn firmware concepts in partnership with experienced firmware engineers

  • Agile methodologies and the ability to implement and manage Agile processes

  • Developing Azure or AWS cloud-hosted applications

Location: OMAX, Kent, Washington (Relocation Assistance provided)

Besides our incredible culture, some of the benefits you can expect with a career at Hypertherm Associates:

  • Global, 100% employee-owned company

  • Profit-Sharing

  • Employee Stock Ownership

  • Five days/year Community Service Time

  • Strong commitment to Environmental Stewardship

  • Stable, growing organization with a no-layoff philosophy

Sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time.
