What is a temporary software engineer?

A Temporary Software Engineer is a short-term position where an engineer is hired to work on software development projects for a limited period. These roles are often used to fill gaps in teams, handle increased workloads, or contribute to specific project phases. Temporary software engineers perform coding, debugging, testing, and other development tasks like permanent employees but without long-term commitments. Depending on company needs, these roles may last from a few weeks to several months.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a temporary software engineer?

A Temporary Software Engineer should have a strong background in programming languages, software development methodologies, and relevant degrees or certifications, such as a bachelor's in computer science. Familiarity with tools like Git, project management platforms, and frameworks such as React, Angular, or .NET is often necessary. Excellent communication, adaptability, and time management skills help a candidate quickly integrate into teams and contribute effectively to short-term projects. These competencies ensure a Temporary Software Engineer can deliver high-quality results within limited timelines and dynamic work environments.

What types of projects are temporary software engineers typically assigned to, and how do these assignments differ from permanent roles?

Temporary Software Engineers are usually brought on to support specific short-term projects, address skill gaps, or help meet approaching deadlines. They may work on software module development, bug fixes, system migrations, or assisting during peak workload periods. Unlike permanent staff, their assignments are often well-defined with clear objectives and limited durations, which means they are expected to quickly understand project requirements and make immediate contributions. Temporary roles can provide valuable exposure to diverse technologies and work environments, making them an excellent opportunity for broadening experience and building a professional network.

Job description

Senior Engineer, Full-Stack Software (R5751) Develop and deploy Foundry-backed MES/ERP/analytics applications for manufacturing

Location: Dallas, Texas

Compensation: $120,000 - 190,000 USD / year

About The Role Full-Stack Software Engineer

The Applications team within Software Integration & Operations builds internal tools that power Shield AI's most critical operations across Production, Customer Success, Supply Chain, and Engineering. Our portfolio spans over-the-air (OTA) update systems, simulation training platforms, fleet sustainment software, and enterprise applications supporting aircraft manufacturing. We're growing quickly and looking for a Full-Stack Software Engineer to help design, develop, and deploy robust applications that directly enable manufacturing, operational planning, and execution — all within a Foundry-integrated ecosystem. If you thrive in fast-moving environments, enjoy solving complex problems with modern software, and want to see your code deliver immediate impact, this role is for you.

What you'll do:

  • Execute the development and release of Foundry-backed applications that power MES, ERP, and operational analytics.
  • Develop end-to-end features: From backend services and data transformations to user-facing interfaces — ensuring performance, maintainability, and security.
  • Collaborate with production managers, engineers, and supply chain teams to understand workflows and deliver scalable software solutions.
  • Leverage Palantir Foundry: Use Foundry's APIs, ontology, and visualization tools to integrate data across multiple domains.
  • Deliver continuously: Write well-tested, maintainable code and iterate quickly based on real-world feedback.
  • Shape the roadmap: Contribute to technical direction, make sound architecture decisions, and help scale our Foundry development capabilities.

Required qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in full-stack application development with proven ownership of deployed solutions.
  • Hands-on experience designing and building React application and TypeScipt/Javascript based backend (API)
  • Strong skills in data modeling, working with large datasets, and building analytical workflows.
  • Solid foundation in software design, testing, and documentation.
  • Ability to deliver complex projects independently while collaborating effectively across teams.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Palantir Foundry (ontology, pipelines, APIs, visualization) or other large-scale data platforms.
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating Python data-processing pipelines
  • Experience building software for manufacturing, supply chain or aircraft maintenance.
  • Familiarity with modern software delivery practices (version control, testing, CI/CD).
