Job Summary
The Trail Point Assistant Swim Club Coach is responsible for assisting planning, managing, and directing the competitive youth swim team and for ensuring the safety of participants while operating within the policies, procedures, and practices of Des Moines Area Community College.
Essential Functions
Assist the Trail Point Swim Coach in the development and implementation of a team program that instills a desire to have fun, supports team members, stresses good sportsmanship, and improves individual performance in an enthusiastic manner. Assist in designing and executing age group swim practices that align with the swimmer's development goals and performance outcomes. Assist in the training and instruction of swimming skills and techniques appropriate to the level of the swimmers during practice sessions.
Assist in driving swimmer recruitment and retention by cultivating strong relationships within the local swim community, maintaining a visible and active presence at key events in Ankeny and surrounding areas, and fostering a welcoming, growth-oriented environment for athletes and families.
Assist in maintaining an up-to-date team roster and foster strong, proactive communication with swim families by providing timely information on practices, meets, and club events. Serve as a resource to answer questions, mediate disputes, and ensure a supportive environment that promotes team unity and trust.
Assist in overseeing the scheduling and logistical execution of all swim meets, helping to ensure smooth coordination of team attendance and administrative operations for both home and away events. Collaborate closely with volunteers to assist in managing meet-day responsibilities and creating an organized, positive experience for athletes and families.
Assist the Swim Coach and Aquatics Coordinator in monitoring and maintaining proper chemical balance and water quality across all three Trail Point pools to ensure a safe and compliant environment. Partner with aquatics staff to align swim lesson programming with swim club operations, promoting a cohesive and seamless facility usage experience.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Prior swim coach/instructor and/or competitive coaching experience.
Current Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
Strong communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage time.
Demonstrated ability to effectively assess skill levels of youth swimmers and train in appropriate techniques.
Ability to initiate, cultivate, and maintain relationships with a wide variety of individuals coming from varied backgrounds.
Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions.
Ability to understand and assess chemical and water quality.
Knowledge of current software applications.
Desired Qualifications
Previous competitive coaching experience.
American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches Certification.
American Red Cross Principles of Coaches Training.
Registered USA Swimming Coach.
SafeSport Certified.
Knowledge of Meet Manager and/or Team Unify software programs.
