Overview
The Campus Veterinarian provides professional medical oversight and veterinary care for all animals housed at Mt. San Antonio College's farm, equine, and instructional facilities. This position reports directly to the Dean of the Natural Sciences Division, who also serves as the Institutional Official (IO) for the College's animal care and use program. This direct reporting relationship ensures veterinary independence and regulatory compliance under USDA, AVMA-CVTEA, and IACUC standards.
The Veterinarian collaborates closely with the Farm Manager and Program Director to coordinate daily animal health, welfare, and biosecurity operations that support both instructional and production activities on campus.
Minimum Qualifications
โ€ข Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited institution.
โ€ข Current, active California veterinary license in good standing.
โ€ข Minimum two (2) years of clinical experience in companion animal, livestock, or academic practice.
โ€ข Demonstrated knowledge of animal welfare and husbandry standards applicable to instructional settings.
โ€ข Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
โ€ข Provide clinical oversight, routine examinations, and on-call consultation for animal health and welfare.
โ€ข Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop preventive medicine, nutrition, and biosecurity protocols.
โ€ข Review and advise on the care, housing, and use of animals consistent with USDA Animal Welfare Act standards.
โ€ข Participate as a standing member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
โ€ข Oversee compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards related to animal welfare, disease control, and biosecurity.
โ€ข Maintain accurate records of animal health and treatments.
โ€ข Serve as a resource for training and education in animal care and welfare.
โ€ข Perform other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
โ€ข Experience with veterinary technology, agricultural, or academic animal science programs.
โ€ข USDA Category I or II accreditation.
โ€ข Experience working with institutional animal care committees (IACUC) or similar oversight bodies.
License(s) & Other Requirements
โ€ข Valid California Veterinary License.
โ€ข USDA Accreditation appropriate to species on campus (or ability to obtain).
โ€ข Eligibility for DEA controlled-substance registration (if required).
Working Environment:
Work involves both office and animal facility environments, including barns, kennels, and laboratories. Protective gear provided as needed. Occasional evenings or weekends may be required for animal emergencies or inspections.
Physical Demands
โ€ข Must be able to perform physical activities associated with animal handling and clinical care, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and restraining animals of various sizes.
โ€ข Ability to lift and carry materials or animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
โ€ข Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and fine motor skills for procedures and examinations.
โ€ข May require extended periods of standing during laboratory or field work.
โ€ข Potential exposure to chemicals, disinfectants, or sharps used in clinical and laboratory procedures.
