Temporary Order Picker information

What is a temporary order picker?

A Temporary Order Picker is a warehouse worker hired for a short-term period to locate, select, and prepare items for customer orders. They typically use handheld scanners or inventory lists to find products, collect them from shelves, and prepare them for shipment. Temporary Order Pickers often work during busy seasons or to cover staffing shortages and may be required to lift, move, and package various goods. This role is essential for efficient warehouse operations and timely order fulfillment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary order picker?

To thrive as a Temporary Order Picker, you need strong attention to detail, basic math skills, and the physical ability to lift and move inventory, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, and pallet jacks is typically expected. Reliability, teamwork, and time management are essential soft skills that help you excel in fast-paced environments. These skills ensure accurate order fulfillment, efficiency, and safety, which are crucial for maintaining smooth warehouse operations.

What are some common challenges a temporary order picker might face during their assignment?

Temporary Order Pickers often work in fast-paced warehouse environments where meeting daily quotas and accuracy targets is crucial. Adapting quickly to new processes, learning warehouse layouts, and mastering inventory systems can be challenging, especially in short-term roles. Physical demands, such as standing for long periods and lifting heavy items, are common aspects of the job. Effective communication with supervisors and team members is essential to ensure orders are fulfilled correctly and on time. Successful order pickers stay organized, ask questions when needed, and remain flexible as priorities shift throughout their assignment.
