Temporary Observability Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Observability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Observability Engineer, you need strong knowledge of monitoring, logging, and tracing concepts, along with experience in cloud environments and a relevant technical degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, and APM solutions, as well as scripting languages such as Python or Bash, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and clear communication help professionals quickly integrate into teams and address incidents effectively. These skills ensure the reliability, performance, and visibility of systems, which is critical for rapid troubleshooting and maintaining service health.

What are some typical challenges Temporary Observability Engineers face when quickly integrating into ongoing projects?

Temporary Observability Engineers often join teams with established systems and workflows, which can make ramping up quickly a challenge. They may need to familiarize themselves with existing monitoring tools, dashboards, and alerting configurations in a short time, while also understanding the team's priorities and pain points. Communication is key, as collaborating with DevOps, SREs, and developers helps ensure observability improvements are aligned with ongoing initiatives. Flexibility, adaptability, and strong documentation skills are especially valuable in this fast-paced, project-based environment.

What are Temporary Observability Engineers?

Temporary Observability Engineers are professionals hired on a short-term basis to design, implement, and optimize monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions within an organization's IT infrastructure. Their main goal is to ensure system reliability and visibility by setting up tools and processes that track application performance, detect issues, and provide actionable insights. These engineers often work on specific projects or to fill a gap during peak periods, focusing on improving how systems are observed and managed. They collaborate with development, operations, and security teams to ensure seamless integration of observability practices. After their contract ends, they may provide documentation and training to help permanent staff maintain and evolve the observability setup.

Job Title

Director Platform Engineering and Automation

About your role

At Fiserv, we are transforming how financial services platforms are built, operated, and observed at enterprise scale. As Director, Platform Engineering and Automation, you will lead the strategy and execution of enterprise telemetry, observability, and platform automation capabilities that underpin availability, resiliency, performance, and client experience for Merchant services. This role is highly visible and cross functional. You will partner extensively with application development teams, production support, SRE/operations, cyber, and business stakeholders to standardize telemetry, improve operational insight, and enable initiative-taking issue detection and remediation. Success in this role requires strong technical depth combined with exceptional communication, influence, and coordination skills. This role is critical to improving platform stability, client experience, and operational efficiency across Fiserv. You will sit at the intersection of engineering excellence and business outcomes, ensuring teams have the insights and automation needed to operate reliably at scale.

What you will do:

  • Execute Enterprise telemetry and observability strategy, including metrics, logs, traces, events, dashboards, alerting, and SLOs across hybrid and cloud platforms.
  • Work with platform engineering teams responsible for observability platforms, automation frameworks, and self-service capabilities for application and infrastructure teams.
  • Drive standardization of telemetry and instrumentation across application portfolios to improve visibility, resiliency, and operational maturity.
  • Partner closely with application development, production support, SRE, cyber security, and business teams to align observability capabilities to business outcomes and operational needs.
  • Establish and govern best practices for monitoring, alerting, incident response, and automation, reducing MTTR and operational noise.
  • Lead automation initiatives across CI/CD, environment provisioning, monitoring, and remediation to eliminate manual toil.
  • Translate business and operational requirements into scalable platform capabilities, roadmaps, and technical standards.
  • Provide clear executive level communication on platform health, risks, operational insights, and improvement plans.
  • Manage vendor partnerships and platform selections related to observability, telemetry, and automation tools.
  • Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all inclusive and may evolve as business needs change.

Experience you will need to have:

  • 8+ years of experience in platform engineering, or site reliability engineering.
  • Strong direct experience with telemetry and observability concepts (metrics, logs, traces, alerting, dashboards).
  • Experience operating in cloud and hybrid environments (AWS, Azure, and/or GCP).
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, and automation frameworks.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming or scripting languages (e.g., Java, Python, Go, C#, etc.).
  • Strong experience collaborating across development, operations, and business teams in large, complex organizations.
  • Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.
  • 8+ years of an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or military service.

Experience that would be great to have:

  • Experience leading or implementing enterprise observability platforms (e.g., application performance monitoring, infrastructure monitoring, log analytics).
  • Financial services or highly regulated industry experience.
  • Experience building self-service platform capabilities for development teams.
  • Familiarity with SRE practices, error budgets, SLIs/SLOs, and incident management.

Sponsorship:

You must currently possess valid and unrestricted U.S. work authorization to be considered for this role. Individuals with temporary visas including, but not limited to, F-1 (OPT, CPT, STEM), H-1B, H-2, or TN, or any candidate requiring sponsorship, now or in the future, will not be considered for this role.
