Job description

Job Title: Temp Aide - Crewperson - Student Internship - Millings

Position Function: Wichita Public Schools is seeking a motivated student intern to assist in the Millings department during the summer months. This position provides hands-on experience in woodworking, fabrication, shop operations and installation while working alongside experienced technicians. The intern will gain valuable knowledge of tools, materials, installation, and shop safety practices in a real-world environment.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Wichita Public Schools and is appropriate for their position

Additional Duties: The student intern will work directly alongside and under the supervision of an experienced shop technician and on their own, when capable.

Equipment: This position may require the ability to operate various equipment in the Print Center, in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: Some Travel within district may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials (up to 25-50 lbs as needed)
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail
  • Work is performed in a shop setting with exposure to dust, noise, and machinery
  • Ability to work in a dusty environment for extended periods is required
  • Must be comfortable standing, walking, and performing physical tasks throughout the shift

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Interrelations:

  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors
  • Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assist skilled technicians with cabinet making and millwork projects
  • Measure, cut, and prepare materials under supervision
  • Read and interpret a tape measure accurately
  • Operate basic woodworking tools and equipment with guidance
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Follow all safety procedures and shop guidelines
  • Perform other duties assigned to support shop operations

Qualification Profile:

  • Current high school student eligible for internship placement
  • Interest in woodworking, construction, or skilled trades
  • Basic math skills, including the ability to read a tape measure
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions
  • Ability to work safely under supervision
