What is a temporary lawyer?

Temporary lawyers, also known as contract attorneys, are legal professionals hired for a specific period or project rather than a permanent position. They often assist law firms or companies with increased workloads, special projects, or to cover staff absences. Their responsibilities can include legal research, document review, drafting legal documents, and providing legal advice. Temporary lawyers offer flexibility for employers and can gain diverse experience working in various legal environments.

What are temporary jobs for lawyers?

If you are a licensed attorney, you can find temporary and part-time work in document review. In these jobs, your primary responsibilities are to determine whether documents, emails, and other types of materials are relevant to a case. Contract-to-hire jobs in specialized areas of the law, such as finance and real estate, are also available, and in these roles, you provide legal services to a corporation’s in-house legal team or as a member of a law firm. Additionally, firms sometimes hire attorneys for short-term assignments with a specific client or project, and in some cases, these placements ultimately become permanent positions.

What types of assignments and projects can a temporary lawyer expect to handle, and how does this impact their work schedule?

Temporary Lawyers are often brought in to support law firms or corporate legal departments during periods of high workload, such as large litigation cases, document review projects, or due diligence for mergers and acquisitions. Assignments can vary widely in complexity and duration, sometimes requiring intensive short-term work with tight deadlines. As a result, Temporary Lawyers should be prepared for fluctuating schedules, with some periods of overtime and others with more flexibility. The role offers exposure to diverse legal areas and teams, making it a valuable way to build experience and professional networks in the legal field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary lawyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Lawyer, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, a valid law license, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, document review platforms, and case management systems is often required. Excellent time management, adaptability, and clear communication help you quickly integrate into new teams and manage shifting caseloads. These skills ensure Temporary Lawyers can deliver high-quality legal work efficiently while meeting client and firm expectations in dynamic environments.
