The City of Valdez Animal Shelter is hiring Temporary Animal Shelter Attendants.
Under direction of the Chief Animal Control Officer or Animal Control Officer the temporary animal shelter attendant assists with animals, volunteers, visitors and storefront. This position will be scheduled to work weekends and other potential shifts not to exceed 7.5 hours per day.
This is a temporary, non-benefited position work up to 7.5 hours per day, potentially with a non-traditional schedule to include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
Minimum qualifications:
  • Candidates must be at least 16 years of age;
  • Have good verbal and written communications skills;
  • Flexibility in scheduling;
  • Ability to work major holidays occasionally;
  • Previous experience working with animals is a plus.

Positions are open until filled, review of applicants begins April 2, 2026.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform animal care duties such as:
    • Preparing food, feeding, and watering;
    • Cleaning and disinfecting animal kennels, rooms, cages, bedding, food bowls, etc.;
    • Bathing animals;
    • Providing medical care for animals;
    • Sweeping and mopping floors;
    • Picking up fecal matter;
    • Showing animals to the public;
    • Walking dogs;
  • Overseeing visitors and volunteers;
  • Providing information to the public in a friendly manner;
  • Collect license, impound, adoption and housing fees;
  • Tending to the pet supply store by stocking inventory and ringing up transactions;
  • Entering information about animals and other items into the appropriate data base;
  • Keeping animal control officer(s), and other staff updated on any need for medical care of the animals;
  • Ability to operate the shelter by yourself;
  • Performing intakes and initial animal assessment;
  • Performing out processing of animals.

Knowledge, skills and other characteristics:
  • Works well with little supervision;
  • Basic computer skills, understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel, mastery of shelter software;
  • Cash handling and counting back change;
  • Basic knowledge of animal types, breeds, identification and care.

This is a non-benefited temporary position.
