Job description

You will serve as a ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (MECHANICAL) in the Temporary Services /Steam Plant Cleanliness Branch (Code 269), Fluid/Mechanical Engineering and Planning Division (Code 260), Office of Chief Engineer (Code 240), Engineering and Planning Department (Code 200) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.Qualifications:Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Designing, specifying, and installing temporary service systems (including high-pressure air, breathing air, temporary cooling water manifolds, and steam lines) to support nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers during shipyard availabilities and drydock periods.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving complex mechanical and utility system failures on the waterfront, evaluating operational data to recommend and implement engineering solutions that comply with NAVSEA and SUBSAFE safety parameters.
  • Coordinating cross-functionally with production shops (such as Shipfitters, Pipefitters, and Machinists) and related engineering disciplines (structural and electrical) to integrate temporary ship-to-shore utility hookups safely and efficiently.
  • Researching and procuring specialized mechanical components and Level I/SUBSAFE materials utilizing DoD material databases (such as MAT, OneTouch, and WebFLIS), ensuring strict compliance with military ordering codes and quality assurance requirements.
  • Evaluating and applying the latest technological developments, testing methods, and engineering precedents to modernize waterfront utility distribution, mitigate operational risks, and reduce cost and lead times.
