Job description
Under medical direction to operate and maintain electroencephalographic (EEG) equipment in order to conduct standard and special electroencephalograms, and to learn to conduct other specialized neurophysiologic examinations.
The established eligible list will be used for temporary extra help assignments.
Graduation from an EEG technology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education or one (1) year experience in performing EEG exams is required for this position.
Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH) is the second largest public health care system in California and includes four acute care hospitals, 14 clinics and 60+ specialty and sub-specialty services. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center- SCVMC is a full-service tertiary acute care teaching hospital with 699 licensed beds providing a wide range of specialized services, including Rehabilitation, Burn, Trauma, and NICU. SCVMC was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as #6 Rehabilitation Hospital in the nation and #1 in the West and designated as a 2024 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care, Heart Failure, Stroke, Hip Fracture, and Pneumonia.
O'Connor Hospital- O'Connor Hospital (OCH) is a 358 licensed bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to residents of Santa Clara County. It was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in the county. OCH has grown significantly over the past five years in both its inpatient volume and its Emergency Department visits. Along with these volume increases other ancillary and clinical departments like imaging, lab, pharmacy, and respiratory have seen growth as well.
St. Louise Regional Hospital- Since 1989, St. Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH) has been caring for the residents in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient medical specialties. SLRH has 93 beds, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, SLRH maintains a CALSTAR 2 emergency helicopter base on the premises.
Regional Medical Centerโ Regional Medical Center (RMC) is a 258-bed hospital that is the main emergency healthcare provider for East San Josรฉ, treating a wide range of critical and life-threatening conditions for more than 60 years. Since the SCVH integration of RMC effective 4/1/25, RMC has expanded the critical services including Level II trauma, Thrombectomy capable Stroke Center and STEMI care, and has been seeing an increased number of emergency visits and inpatient volume.
Typical Tasks- Applies recording electrodes using standard 10-20 required measured positions on the patient's head and checks their performance with an impedance meter;
- Calibrates, evaluates, adjusts, cleans and maintains EEG equipment notifying supervisor of need for major maintenance and repairs;
- Extracts information from patient's clinical records and interviews patient or family members to obtain additional information;
- Selects predetermined electrode combinations (montages), as well as special combinations as needed for specific cases being studied;
- Obtains EEG recordings (routine, sleep, bedside, and electrocerebral), recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them;
- When indicated, monitors other variables such as electromyogram, electrocardiogram, electro-oculogram, respirations, etc.;
- Records various kinds of electroencephalographic (EEG) examinations, and implements alternative methods of adjustment when appropriate;
- Performs routine activation procedures such as hyperventilation and photic stimulation;
- Inserts nasopharyngeal electrodes for sleep studies;
- Completes various billing forms;
- Assigns file numbers to examination documents, logs examination file and files appropriately;
- Learns to perform more complex and specialized examinations such as: geriatric, adult, pediatric and neonatal intensive care monitoring, surgical monitoring, electrocorticography, and evoked potential studies;
- May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
- Performs related work as required.
Sufficient education, training and/or experience to demonstrate the possession and application of the following knowledge and abilities.
Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are obtained through possession of a high school diploma or equivalent AND Graduation from an EEG technology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education or one (1) year experience in performing EEG exams. Eligibility for/or successful completion of the Part I (Written) Examination for registration by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (ABRET) is preferred.
Knowledge of:
- Major neurological, neurosurgical, psychiatric, toxic, and metabolic conditions or other factors which may affect cerebral electrical activity;
- The neuroanatomy (descriptive and functional) and neurophysiology of the central nervous system;
- Methods and techniques of obtaining standard range of various kinds of EEGs;
- Emergency procedures for care of acutely ill patients;
- First aid for all types of seizures;
- Medications used by and for clinical neurophysiology patients, including sedatives;
- Significance of other neurodiagnostic studies (CAT, arteriogram, etc).
Ability to:
- Operate, calibrate, and make minor repairs and adjustments to laboratory equipment;
- Recognize artifacts and take steps to eliminate the causes;
- Work with patients safely and sympathetically, interview patients to obtain information, and gain patient's cooperation in the conducting of tests;
- Recognize unusual behavior patterns in patients and deal with emergency situations effectively;
- Keep routine records and maintain files;
- Learn to perform more complex and specialized examinations such as: intensive care monitoring, surgical monitoring, electrocorticography and evoked potential studies.
