Required CredentialsPh.D. in Biotechnology or related fieldMaster's or Ph.D. in Biotechnology or related field
Work EnvironmentAcademic labs, research institutionsIndustry labs, biotech companies
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutesBiotech firms, pharmaceutical companies
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Postdoctoral Biotechnology roles typically involve conducting advanced research in academic or research institutions, often focusing on publishing findings. Research Scientist in Biotechnology positions are more industry-oriented, emphasizing product development and applied research within biotech companies. Both roles require strong scientific credentials, but their work environments and career paths differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Biotechnology Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Biotechnology Researcher, you need a Ph.D. in biotechnology or a related field, strong expertise in molecular biology techniques, and a proven research background. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), advanced analytical instruments, and data analysis software like Python or R is often required. Excellent problem-solving skills, collaboration, and effective scientific communication set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for driving innovative research, publishing impactful findings, and contributing effectively to multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers in biotechnology, and how can they be managed?

Postdoctoral researchers in biotechnology often encounter challenges such as balancing independent research with collaborative projects, adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, and securing funding for their work. Managing these challenges typically involves developing strong project management skills, actively seeking mentorship, and building a professional network both within and outside the host institution. Regular collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and staying updated on the latest scientific advancements can also help postdocs remain competitive and productive in this dynamic field.

What are postdoctoral positions in biotechnology?

Postdoctoral positions in biotechnology are temporary research roles typically undertaken after completing a Ph.D. in a related field. These positions allow scientists to deepen their expertise, develop new skills, and conduct advanced research in areas such as molecular biology, genetic engineering, or bioinformatics. Postdoctoral researchers often work in universities, research institutes, or industry labs, contributing to innovative projects that can lead to scientific publications, patents, or new biotechnological products. Such roles are an important step toward independent research careers in academia, industry, or government.

Summary of Position: Our BIO-SENS (Bio-Inspired On-demand Strategies for Engineering Nanostructured Sensors) team, a National Science Foundation (NSF) EPSCoR team led by University of New Hampshire (UNH) is looking for a new post doctoral member for our leadership team. The team has active members at Auburn University, University of New England, University of Wyoming, and University of Maine. The focus of the team is on developing engineering principles to guide on-demand biosensor design towards Industry 4.0 applications. The selected postdoctoral researcher will become part of the BIO-SENS leadership team, engage with industrial partners, and get experience managing a research budget.
The specific postdoctoral researcher will be hosted by the Surface Enhanced Electrochemical Diagnostic Sensors (SEEDS Lab) and mentored by Prof. Jeffrey M Halpern at the University of New Hampshire. The postdoctoral research is expected to work extensively on surface modification of proteins and the assessment of stimulus response of a dynamic stimuli-responsive surface protein with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The candidate should provide a 2-page research statement focused on the minimum and preferred qualifications.
In addition, this research will be coupled with a multi-tiered workforce development plan integrated throughout the project that includes training for a new biotechnology workforce in AL, ME, NH, and WY. We expect the postdoctoral scholar to be a partner in some of these activities, especially in the diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility work centered around training the new biotechnology industry workforce. The candidate is expected to provide a 1-page DEIA statement on their experience and vision.
