Job Summary: The High School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly school environment. This position plays a key role in ensuring the health and safety of students, staff, and visitors by performing daily cleaning, sanitation, and minor maintenance tasks throughout the school facility and grounds. The custodian also assists with school event setups and responds to urgent facility needs as they arise.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, cafeteria, and other school areas.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and empty trash and recycling bins regularly. Refill supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper in restrooms and common areas.
  • Secure and lock doors and windows as scheduled; ensure building is safely opened and/or closed each day.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, unclogging drains, and reporting larger issues to the head custodian or maintenance department.
  • Assist with setting up and tearing down for school events, meetings, or special programs. Maintain building security and report any suspicious activities or safety hazards.
  • Keep exterior walkways and entrances clean and clear of debris, snow, or ice as needed.
  • Follow all district safety, health, and custodial protocols and procedures.
  • Perform seasonal deep-cleaning tasks during school breaks and summer months.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of cleaning practices, chemicals, and safety protocols.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, stand, walk, and operate cleaning equipment for extended periods.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.

Work Environment: This position works indoors and outdoors in various conditions. The applicant must be able to respond to facility needs promptly and handle cleaning supplies and equipment safely.
