Appointment Full-time Equivalency:  0.74 maximum

Exempt or Non-Exempt:  Non-Exempt

Summary:  This is a temporary appointment with a pre-determined end date not to exceed 1 year and is subject to an earlier termination if necessary. Temporary employees have no entitlement or expectation of continued employment during or beyond the appointment period. Position may average up to 29 hours per week.

Classification Summary:
Under the supervision of the New Mexico State University Fire Department (NMSU FD), the Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-P) will perform duties associated with providing rescue services and emergency medical care to the sick and injured, on the NMSU Las Cruces campus, in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations and NMSU FD's policies and medical protocols. The EMT-P will provide emergency and non -emergency services as requested. The EMT-P will provide medical treatment consistent with the EMT-I Scope of Practice as identified by Title 7 Chapter 27 Part 11 of the New Mexico Administrative Code. They will also ensure completion of incident reports and activity reports, and participate in any NMSU and/or EMS training as identified by the NMSU Fire Chief.

Classification Standard Duties:
Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls calmly, efficiently and promptly; Administering basic and restricted advanced life support to patients at the scene in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards. Keeps up-to-date on equipment and protocols and procedures. Participate on continuing Ed courses to maintain their EMS licenses. Ensure that UTV's, and passenger vehicles are response ready. This is not a full representation of all duties and may be assigned other duties as needed by the department. The EMT-P must possess and apply knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at their licensed level, in a dignified and compassionate manner, including but not limited to: The EMT-P is allowed to administer additional drugs and approved medications through additional routes than is an EMT-B. The EMT-P is expected to be familiar with the skills and procedures allowed to be performed with and without medical direction, and the drugs that are permitted to be administered by their classification an the approved routes that may be used. Full details of these classifications may be found in Title 7 Chapter 27 Part 11 of the New Mexico Administrative Code, Section 8, SCOPES OF PRACTICE FOR LICENSED EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PERSONNEL, Subsection K: EMS First Responders; Subsection L: EMT-Basic: Subsection M: EMT-Intermediate; and Subsection N: EMT-Paramedic; The EMT-P must perform all job responsibilities in a manner that protects patient privacy:

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Required Education: High School Diploma, or GED certificate.; Required Experience:One (1) year of experience as a paid, full-time EMT-P or two (2) years in a volunteer or combination paid/volunteer type EMS service provider; Equivalency:Any equivalent or higher combination of training, experience, and licensure.; Required Certification/License: National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic with ability to acquire New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE:Maintain a thorough working knowledge of EMS service site; Maintain a thorough working knowledge of applicable current standards of care, including equipment functions and uses; The EMT-P must have knowledge and understanding of emergency scene principles, practices, standards and resources. They must also have knowledge and understanding of local, State, Federal fire/safety regulations and codes, and knowledge of related accreditation, certification, and licensure requirements. EMT-P must have knowledge and ability to perform EMS skills as needed under medical direction per approved arm of the EMS Bureau's Standard of Care.; SKILLS:The EMT-P has additional allowable skills with Service Medical Director approval that include items such as peripheral venous puncture/access, blood drawing, pediatric intraosseous tibial access, and adult intraosseous access;EMT-I must have records maintenance experience, computer skills, EMS reporting and EMS software knowledge, and above average technical reading, writing and oral communication.; ABILITIES:Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands, communicate effectively in verbal and written form; establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers; and other firefighting and emergency services agencies. Ability to provide guidance and support to other EMT staff. Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (EMT-P) will provide medical treatment within the EMT-P Scope of Practice as identified by Title 7 Chapter 27 Part 11 of the New Mexico Administrative Code and follow all applicable laws, NMSU regulations, NMSU Fire Department policies and medical protocols as set forth by NMSU's Medical Director. They will ensure timely completion of incident reports, activity reports, and equipment inspection reports. They will participate in EMS training as identified as identified by the Fire Chief. The EMT-P is expected to be familiar with the skills and procedures allowed to be performed by their licensure level.

Preferred Qualifications

National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic with ability to acquire New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic license.
NM Class E Drivers license.

Special Requirements of the Position
EMT positions must successfully complete:
Final Background Check through NMSU Police Department;
Test for illicit drug use.
