Job Summary:
The Signs and Markings Technician perform specialized semi-skilled and technical work in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs and pavement markings. This position is responsible for the layout, placement, and maintenance of regulatory, warning, guide, and traffic signs, as well as pavement markings, including paint and preformed tape, in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Work also includes the proper setup and use of temporary traffic control devices in a variety of conditions, including potentially hazardous environments. This position reports to the Signs & Markings Supervisor or, in their absence, the Traffic Operations Supervisor, and is required to perform emergency on-call duties as needed.
Experience, Education, and Skills:
Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma
  • One (1) year of experience in street maintenance, traffic control, construction, or a related field preferred.
  • IMSA Level I certification in traffic signs and markings or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year.
  • Work Zone Safety Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
  • Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required within one (1) year of hire date.

OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,
AND
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Preferred:
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of traffic control devices and pavement markings in accordance with MUTCD standards.
  • Knowledge of roadway safety practices and work zone traffic control.
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, and methods used in sign installation and pavement marking.
  • Ability to work safely in high-traffic environments and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Skill in operating pavement marking equipment and performing equipment maintenance.
  • Skill in installing, repairing, and fabricating traffic signs.
  • Skill in reading work orders, maps, and basic plans.

Essential Functions:
  • Installs, places, and maintains regulatory, warning, and guide signs, as well as pavement markings, in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Operates and maintains pavement marking equipment, including paint trucks and related systems.
  • Removes existing pavement markings and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on striping equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces street signage throughout the City.
  • Fabricates traffic signs and assists with work orders generated through citizen request tracking systems.
  • Coordinates utility locates by notifying Colorado 811 prior to sign installation or excavation activities.
  • Maintains accurate records of traffic control devices using GPS and asset management systems.
  • Assists with traffic control setup and ensures safe work zone practices in accordance with established standards.
  • Orders materials and supplies as directed to support operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in alignment with division goals and operational needs.

Travel: Category A-Standard Local Travel: This position requires occasional local travel within the County. Employees may be expected to walk or drive short distances to attend meetings, trainings, or perform work at other city buildings or partner sites.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in a variety of municipal environments, including roadways, detention ponds, stormwater facilities, and construction sites, with occasional indoor work in maintenance shops or similar facilities.
  • Regular exposure to varying and adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice.
  • Works in close proximity to and may operate heavy equipment and vehicles, including trucks, loaders, backhoes, and snowplows.
  • Routinely exposed to loud noise, vibration, moving machinery, dust, fumes, road debris, organic debris, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Duties are frequently performed in and around live traffic, construction zones, and active stormwater infrastructure.
  • Requires adherence to established safety practices, traffic control procedures, and consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work may involve navigating uneven terrain, entering confined spaces, and working on elevated surfaces, including manholes, culverts, embankments, rooftops, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Work schedules may include extended shifts and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts as part of an on-call rotation.

Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently walk, stand, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
  • Frequently climb ladders, stairs, and equipment, and regularly enter and exit vehicles and machinery.
  • Regularly lift, carry, push, and pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds, with assistance as needed.
  • Perform sustained physical labor outdoors for extended shifts of 8-12 hours, including during inclement weather and emergency response situations.
  • Use sufficient manual dexterity to safely and accurately operate tools, equipment, and vehicle controls, including tasks requiring fine motor skills.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach overhead and below the waist, and work in awkward positions while performing job duties.
  • Maintain adequate visual acuity to read instruments, inspect work areas, and monitor traffic, surroundings, and job site conditions.
  • Hear warning signals, verbal instructions, and equipment sounds in noisy work environments.
  • Maintain a valid DOT Medical Certificate.
