What is a sign installer?

Sign Installers are professionals responsible for assembling, mounting, and installing various types of signs in indoor and outdoor locations. Their work includes reading blueprints or instructions, ensuring proper placement, securing signs safely, and sometimes wiring for lighting or electronic displays. They often use tools such as drills, ladders, and lifts, and must adhere to safety regulations to prevent accidents. Sign Installers may work for sign companies, construction firms, or as independent contractors.

What does a sign installer do?

A sign installer oversees the installation, maintenance, or removal of various types of signage, often for a specific company. Their duties may include transporting signs on large trucks, or traveling to build extensions or replace light bulbs for signs with electric components. Experience working with heavy materials, as well as with different types of wires and bolts, may also be useful. To be successful in this career, you should be comfortable with heights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sign installer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sign Installer, you need strong mechanical aptitude, basic electrical knowledge, and experience in construction or installation, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Sign Installers typically work in crews of one to three people and report to the Operations Manager. Travel is primarily local.

Responsibilities

  • Install a variety of commercial signs safely, accurately, and in accordance with company quality standards.

  • Load, transport, unload, and inspect signs, equipment, and materials before and after each job.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, lifts, cranes, forklifts, and other equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Troubleshoot and solve installation challenges in the field while maintaining quality and safety.
  • Perform service calls, repairs, and preventative maintenance on existing signage.
  • Fabricate and modify sign components as needed to support installations.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure proper operation, appearance, and customer satisfaction.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in clean, organized, and safe working condition.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, contractors, and team members throughout each project.
  • Complete required documentation, photos, and project paperwork accurately and on time.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of commercial sign installation experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and proficiency with hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read drawings, measurements, and installation instructions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also working independently when needed.
  • Ability to safely lift 75 pounds and perform physically demanding work, including climbing ladders and operating aerial lifts.
  • Commitment to safety and delivering quality workmanship.
  • Professional communication and customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of commercial sign installation experience.
  • Michigan Sign Specialist License.
  • CDL Class B.
  • Certified Welder.
  • Forklift Certification.
  • OSHA 10 Certification.
  • Experience operating cranes, bucket trucks, and aerial lifts.
  • Electrical experience related to illuminated and digital signage.
  • Basic fabrication and welding experience.

We're looking for someone who takes pride in doing the job right the first time. The successful candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, solutions-oriented, and committed to delivering a high-quality finished product while providing an outstanding experience for every customer

Compensation

Pay will vary depending on relevant experience. Entry level individuals with no sign installation experience can expect to start between $15-18 an hour, with highly experience sign installers in the mid-$20's an hour.
