Valdez City Schools is seeking dedicated and flexible individuals to fill various substitute positions across our district. As a Substitute Teacher, you will play an essential role in maintaining the continuity and quality of our educational programs. Whether covering classroom instruction, library support, paraprofessional special education assistance, food service, custodial duties, or administrative roles, your presence ensures that students' learning experiences continue smoothly in the absence of their regular teachers and staff. This is a vital, temporary position requiring flexibility, professionalism, and a commitment to fostering a safe and productive learning environment.
Our mission is to create a partnership among schools, parents, and the community, working together to educate, inspire, and empower every student. We offer a challenging and enriching curriculum across all grade levels, from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade, in three schools: Hermon Hutchens Elementary, Gilson Middle School, and Valdez High School.
Substitute Pay:
Valdez City Schools offers competitive pay for substitutes:
  • Teachers: $18 per hour without a current Alaska Teaching Certificate / $25 per hour with a current Alaska Teaching Certificate.
  • Special Rates for Long-Term Substitutes: Substitutes who teach nineteen (19) consecutive school days for the same individual and are Alaska certified will receive on the twentieth (20) day an hourly rate calculated based on the certified negotiated agreement BA column, 0 experience, divided by 185 days, divided by 7.5 hours. Each additional consecutive day following the twentieth (20) will also be paid using the same hourly rate.
    When a long-term absence is arranged in advance, the long-term rate will be applied starting on the first day. Long term subs receive a higher rate as the qualifications are a teacher certification, and they are expected to perform expanded duties. No other benefits are provided. Additional provisions as provided for in State Law, 4 AAC 18.021.
    FY26 example calculation ($55,589/185 days)/7.5hrs=$40.07per hour.
  • Other Positions (Food Service, Custodial, Secretary, Paraprofessional, etc.): $18 per hour.

Please note that no other benefits are provided to substitutes, and they are classified as temporary employees. Benefits eligibility only applies if assigned to a permanent position following a probationary period.
Available Substitute Positions and Salary as of 2025:
  • Teachers: $18.00 per hour (no teaching certificate) / $25.00 per hour (with current Alaska Teaching Certificate)
  • Food Service I: $18.00 per hour
  • Food Service Warehouse/Freight: $18.00 per hour
  • Building Secretary: $18.00 per hour
  • Administrative Secretary: $18.00 per hour
  • Paraprofessional: $18.00 per hour
  • Custodian: $18.00 per hour
  • Library Associate: $18.00 per hour

Qualifications:
  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • For teaching positions, an active Alaska Teaching Certificate is preferred but not required.

Job Description Overview:
Substitutes will be expected to cover a wide range of roles within the school, including:
  • Classroom Support (Teacher Role): Deliver lessons and maintain classroom management.
  • Library Assistance (Library Associate Role): Manage library circulation and assist students.
  • Special Education Support (Paraprofessional Role): Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with special needs.
  • Food Service Support (Food Service Role): Assist with meal preparation and cleanup in the cafeteria.
  • Custodial Support (Custodial Role): Perform cleaning and maintenance duties throughout the school.

General Responsibilities:
  • Follow lesson plans and ensure continuity of instruction.
  • Maintain a positive, respectful classroom environment that encourages student engagement.
  • Assist students in understanding the material, as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records, including attendance and progress notes.
  • Supervise students during various duties (classroom, cafeteria, outdoor areas).

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Adapt to various roles within the school environment as needed.
  • Operate equipment such as library systems, food service machinery, and custodial tools.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Substitutes will work in a variety of environments, including classrooms, cafeterias, libraries, and outdoor areas.
  • Physical requirements may include lifting up to 70 pounds with assistance, standing for extended periods, and performing repetitive tasks.
