Job description

Duties Description As a Tandem Tractor Trailer Operator, you would: drive assigned tractor trailer to designated location by designates routes to deliver and/or pick up shipments in a variety of goods; oversee the loading and unloading of goods at designated spots according to written instructions and to ensure balanced distribution of load; adjust load to meet prescribed wheel/axel load limits; assist laborer, stores clerical, and inmate workers in loading and unloading goods and, in some cases, setting up and assembling goods; check goods loaded and unloaded against shipping documents or have receiving agents sign documents; hitch trailer to tractor, second trailer to dolly in case of tandem load, and connect hoses and lines for braking and lighting systems. Also responsible for maintenance of trucks. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications for Non-Competitive Appointment: Possess and maintain a valid license to operate a Class A motor vehicle in New York State.

Appointees will also be required to meet requirements of the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) for tandem trailer operation*, and obtain and maintain any driver's license endorsements required under the New York State Department of Transportation's (NYSDOT) regulations for the transportation of specific types of products in the course of their normal duties (an example of this would be a Hazardous Materials endorsement). * Candidates must meet the following requirements per NYSTA: Possess a current Commercial Driver License with appropriate endorsement(s) for operation of doubles/triples and air brakes (endorsement = T). If applicable, a Tanker and/or Hazardous Materials endorsement is also necessary (endorsement = X).

AND Be 26 years of age or older, in good health and have a minimum of 5 years provable experience driving tractor trailer combinations (example: tractor trailers/singles or lowboy trailers; not box trucks). AND The candidate must pass the approved DOCCS Longer Combination Vehicle/tandem course within 30 days after hire. Notes: The appointment status will be temporary, and employees not able to meet these requirements within 30 days from their appointment date, will be terminated for not being in accordance with NYSTA and NYSDOT standards.

DOCCS (hiring location personnel) will apply for the NYSTA tandem permit and is responsible for certifying this with NYSTA within 30 days of the hire. After the employee passes the tandem course, DOCCS (hiring location personnel) will complete Form F, https://www.thruway.ny.gov/commercial/forms/ta-w6818.pdf,and send it to NYSTA with the following: a money order, 10-year driver abstract, license, accident reports for 5 years, and the medical examiner's certificate. If approved, a permit is issued to pull tandems on the thruway (form TA-6819)

Each employee must keep possession of this card and present it, if requested. Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
