What is a teletherapy school psychologist?

A Teletherapy School Psychologist is a licensed psychologist who provides mental health services, assessments, counseling, and support to students through online platforms rather than in-person at schools. They work with students, parents, and educators to address learning, behavioral, and emotional issues remotely. Teletherapy allows for flexible scheduling, helps reach students in underserved areas, and maintains continuity of care even when in-person sessions aren’t possible.

What does a teletherapy school psychologist do?

As a teletherapy school psychologist, your job is to work from home to help address student behavior issues. In this role, you may use virtual communication software to talk with students, provide personalized advice to help them overcome their challenges, and otherwise support care plans as set out in an IEP. You may also participate in virtual meetings with parents or guardians when necessary, though schools may ask you to perform these responsibilities in person if you live close to the school. A teletherapy school psychologist may work with students of various ages—some school districts may hire you to work at multiple schools, while others may ask you to work with students from a single school.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a teletherapy school psychologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Teletherapy School Psychologist, you need a strong background in psychology, counseling, and educational assessment, usually supported by a master's or doctoral degree and state licensure or certification. Competence with telehealth platforms, online assessment tools, and secure digital documentation systems is essential. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and rapport-building skills help foster positive relationships with students, families, and school staff in a virtual environment. These abilities are crucial for delivering effective psychological services remotely, ensuring student well-being, and collaborating successfully within educational teams.

How do teletherapy school psychologists typically collaborate with teachers and parents to support students remotely?

Teletherapy School Psychologists regularly coordinate with teachers and parents through virtual meetings, emails, and secure messaging platforms to discuss students’ progress, share assessment results, and develop intervention strategies. Despite working remotely, they often participate in IEP meetings, consult on behavioral or emotional concerns, and provide resources or training to staff and families. This collaborative approach ensures that students receive consistent support and that interventions are effectively implemented in both classroom and home settings.
