Job description

#2465 - Assistant Counsel
Work closely with investment staff on the negotiation and management of investments across all asset classes including public equity, fixed income, real estate, private equity, real assets, absolute return, credit and opportunistic strategies. Actively participate in the negotiation and/or drafting of all substantive documents and review related legal matters arising in the management of the portfolio.

Minimum Qualifications:
To be appointed to this position:
• Candidates must have been admitted to the New York State Bar and must have had two years of experience in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar.
Preferred Qualifications/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Meaningful investment management law experience, particularly in respect of alternative investments.
  • 5+ years of large corporate law firm and/or in-house experience in respect of private investment fund formation and/or mergers and acquisitions.
  • Knowledge of fixed income and public equities investments.
  • Knowledge of corporate, partnership and securities law; and ERISA generally.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiating skills
  • Experience working on bespoke investment transactions.
  • Ability to handle several matters concurrently while keeping pace with transaction timing needs
  • Ability to work collaboratively with investment staff and offer pragmatic solutions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior legal and business staff orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage outside counsel in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Working knowledge of finance and accounting. Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment

Telecommuting
The Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based upon the agency's mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OSC will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8 calendar week restriction, if an employee's primary residence location, duties and work performance are aligned with telecommuting they may be allowed to do so. Upon approval to telecommute, OSC employees may telecommute up to 5 days per pay period.
