SALARY(A-E Steps)
Dietary Cook I:
$18.57 - $22.57 Hourly/$1,485.60 - $1,805.60 Biweekly
Dietary Cook II:
$20.50 - $24.92 Hourly/$1,640.00 - $1,993.60 Biweekly
Position Description: Prepares, cooks, packages and/or serves meals following applicable federal, state and County rules and regulations. Prepares required reports of food service activity. May provide leadership and instruction to persons assisting with kitchen duties, such as juvenile wards, inmates and/or extra help.
Examples of Duties
  • Prepares, cooks, packages and/or serves healthy, appetizing meals.
  • Cleans and sanitizes kitchen, dining areas, cooking equipment, utensils, cookware, storage facilities, refrigerator, freezer etc.
  • Assists in maintaining kitchen equipment.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with applicable federal, state and County rules, regulations and guidelines.
  • Assists in maintaining supply and food inventory; orders produce as needed; properly stores food and supplies.

Education, Experience & Licenses
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Dietary Cook I:
  • One (1) year of cooking experience is required.
  • Experience preparing, baking and cooking food in an institutional or commercial kitchen is highly desired.
Dietary Cook II:
  • One (1) year of experience as a Dietary Cook I with Tehama County or two (2) years of experience in preparing and cooking food and baking in an institutional or commercial kitchen.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
License & Special Requirements:
  • Requires possession of a valid California driver's license.
  • Completion of a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) sanitation certification course for food service workers is desired.
  • Specialized training related to specific assignment may be required.
  • Must obtain and maintain current American Red Cross basic first aid and CPR certificates within 90 days of hire.This course is sponsored by the County of Tehama at no expense to the employee.
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation prior to employment.

Recruitment Information
The department is recruiting for multiple vacancies.
In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Dietary Cook I/II, as well as subsequent vacancies which occur during the life of the eligibility list.
New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.

*Rates listed in this flyer represent a full-time employee's accrual rate and health insurance premium rate. Part-time employees will have pro-rated accruals and health insurance premium rates based on the number of hours they work.
This position is represented by the Local 39 bargaining unit.
SALARY:
  • Annual salary step increases based upon satisfactory performance and completion of one year of employment (Step A to E).

HEALTH:
  • Approximately 80% of the premium for medical, dental, and vision plan is paid by the County (EPO Plan). The plan covers the employee and all eligible dependents at NO ADDITIONAL COST!
  • Employee premiums are $234.54 per month as of January 1, 2025 and $266.97 as of January 1, 2026 for employee and all eligible dependents.

PAID LEAVES:
  • Benefits also include an annual paid leave plan of
    • 96 hours of vacation (increases upon continuous years of service)
    • 96 hours of sick leave
    • 14 paid holidays plus one 8 hour personal holiday
LIFE INSURANCE:
  • Approximately 80% of the premium for a $30,000 life insurance plan for the employee is paid for by the County.

RETIREMENT:
  • A retirement plan through CalPERS.
    • CalPERS Formulas:
      • Classic member = 2% @ 55
      • New Member = 2% @ 62
  • A Deferred Compensation retirement plan option with a County match of up to a maximum of $60 per month.
