Volunteers of America (VOA) is a faith-based, nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. The VOA network includes more than 16,000 full-time professionals empowering 1.5 million people annually through our 29 affiliates in 46 states. We provide hundreds of service programs, including those for seniors and people with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness, and those recovering from addiction. VOA is one of the nation’s most comprehensive human services charities, offering programs for communities, individuals and families.

VOA is seeking a Vice President of Information Technology. The ideal candidate will be a technology leader with extensive, hands-on experience and demonstrated depth in application development, staff training and enablement and enterprise cybersecurity operations. The person in this role will serve as a strategic and technical partner to the Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO) to advance VOA's mission through the design, development and delivery of secure, scalable technology solutions across a dynamic, national nonprofit network. This is a high-visibility role suited to an accomplished, top-tier technologist who leads by example, communicates with executive polish and thrives at the intersection of hands-on execution and organizational influence.

Primary Responsibilities:

This position carries both internal and external interfacing responsibility, presenting technology strategy and outcomes to leadership and executive leadership while representing VOA's technology interests to vendors, auditors, funders and affiliate partners. The primary responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to):

  • Serving as a senior technical partner to the CTIO; advancing the organization's technology goals, objectives and strategic direction through hands-on leadership and execution
  • Leading the design, development and delivery of enterprise applications and technology solutions; leveraging AI-assisted development tools and practices in alignment with VOA's technology governance, data security and responsible-use policies
  • Leading enterprise cybersecurity operations, including risk assessment, controls, monitoring and incident response, ensuring the organization's technology posture meets the highest standards of security and compliance
  • Designing and delivering training programs that build technology capability across the National Office and affiliate network, driving adoption of new and existing platforms
  • Presenting technology strategy, initiatives and performance to executive leadership, the Board and other senior stakeholders; translating complex technical topics into clear, actionable insight
  • Serving as an external-facing representative of VOA's technology function with vendors, partners, auditors and affiliate leadership, including acting as a virtual IT leader to affiliates as needed
  • Developing, maintaining and leading adoption of enterprise IT policies, standards and procedures; modeling secure and compliant technology practices for staff and affiliates
  • Directing enterprise technology infrastructure, backup and disaster recovery and related compliance programs
  • Providing technical leadership over the enterprise systems, data platforms and related systems supporting organizational reporting and operations
  • Leading vendor, contract and procurement engagements; ensuring VOA's interests are represented in technology-related agreements and negotiations
  • Partnering with departments and leaders across the organization on technology-enabled projects that advance organizational priorities
  • Maintaining continuity of technology operations, including availability for after-hours, weekend and holiday support as needed for urgent or emergency issues
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Extensive, demonstrated experience leading application development initiatives from concept through deployment, including hands-on coding and modern AI-assisted development practices
  • Extensive experience leading enterprise cybersecurity operations, including risk management, compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST CSF, SOC-2, HIPAA) and incident response
  • Proven track record designing and delivering technology training programs that build capability across large or distributed organizations
  • Demonstrated success presenting technology strategy and outcomes to executive leadership, boards and other senior audiences with the ability to translate technical complexity into business impact
  • Experience representing an organization's technology interests externally, with vendors, partners, auditors or affiliate and network stakeholders
  • Experience operating within a dynamic, mission-driven and nationally distributed organization; nonprofit, healthcare or human services experience strongly preferred
  • Executive presence and polished written and verbal communication, with the credibility to influence and lead across the organization

Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) or more years of progressive, hands-on technology leadership experience, with significant depth in application development, staff training and cybersecurity operations
  • OR an equivalent combination of education, certification and experience
  • A track record of recognized leadership in technology or cybersecurity - such as prior executive or senior leadership titles, published thought leadership or industry recognition
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator or Developer Associate, PMP or equivalent
  • Experience leading technology functions within a national or multi-affiliate nonprofit, association or public sector network

Physical Capabilities:

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule and respond to urgent or emergency needs outside standard business hours, including occasional evenings, weekends and holidays
