The Director, Enterprise Technology provides strategic leadership, governance, and executive oversight for SHRM's enterprise technology environment, ensuring technology capabilities are secure, resilient, scalable, and aligned with SHRM’s organizational priorities. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role develops and executes the enterprise technology strategy while governing a co-sourced technology operating model that combines internal leadership with an external managed services provider.
The Director serves as SHRM's senior technology advisor, establishing technology strategy, governance, investment priorities, and vendor accountability while ensuring operational excellence through effective oversight of internal stakeholders and external technology partners. This position partners closely with executive leadership to modernize infrastructure, strengthen cybersecurity, improve service delivery, optimize technology investments, and enable innovation that advances SHRM’s organizational objectives.
ResponsibilitiesEnterprise Technology Strategy & Governance
- Develop and execute SHRM's enterprise technology strategy, roadmap, operating plan, architecture principles, and investment priorities aligned with SHRM’s goals.
- Advise the Chief Financial Officer and executive leadership on technology strategy, emerging trends, cybersecurity risks, operational priorities, and technology investments.
- Chair the Technology Operating Steering Committee and establish governance processes that prioritize initiatives, manage technology risk, and support executive decision-making.
- Develop enterprise technology policies, standards, and governance frameworks that promote consistency, security, compliance, and operational excellence.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), automation, cloud services, collaboration platforms, and digital workplace solutions—to identify opportunities that improve organizational effectiveness and business value.
Enterprise Technology Operations & Infrastructure
- Provide executive oversight of SHRM's co-sourced technology operating model, ensuring managed service providers deliver high-quality, cost-effective technology services.
- Govern enterprise infrastructure, cloud environments, identity and access management, collaboration platforms, networking, endpoint management, telecommunications, and core technology services.
- Oversee technology modernization, lifecycle planning, asset management, incident governance, change management, and technical debt reduction.
- Monitor service performance through service level agreements (SLA’s), operational metrics, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Technology Portfolio & Digital Enablement
- Lead enterprise technology portfolio planning and governance, prioritizing initiatives based on strategic alignment, organizational impact, risk, available resources, and return on investment.
- Partner with business leaders to identify technology solutions that improve operational efficiency, enhance employee experience, and support SHRM’s growth.
- Ensure successful implementation, integration, adoption, and optimization of enterprise technology solutions.
- Establish performance dashboards, key performance indicators (KPI’s), and reporting to measure service quality, technology effectiveness, operational performance, and business outcomes.
Cybersecurity, Risk & Business Continuity
- Provide executive oversight of cybersecurity strategy, technology risk management, regulatory compliance, and information security initiatives in partnership with internal stakeholders and external security providers.
- Oversee vulnerability management, identity governance, disaster recovery, backup strategies, incident response planning, and business continuity capabilities.
- Promote SHRM-wide cybersecurity awareness and technology risk mitigation practices.
Vendor, Financial & Contract Management
- Manage executive relationships with managed service providers, software vendors, cloud providers, consultants, and strategic technology partners.
- Lead vendor evaluations, contract negotiations, service level management, quarterly business reviews, and ongoing performance assessments.
- Develop and manage the enterprise technology budget, ensuring effective financial stewardship and optimization of technology investments.
- Evaluate technology investments and business cases to maximize SHRM’s value and long-term sustainability.
Leadership & Organizational Collaboration
- Translate complex technology concepts into clear, business-focused recommendations for executives and stakeholders.
- Foster strong partnerships across departments to ensure technology solutions align with business needs.
- Champion organizational change management, technology adoption, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Promote a culture of accountability, customer service, collaboration, and operational excellence across internal teams and external partners.
- Serve as SHRM's executive technology representative with vendors, consultants, auditors, and external stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field or relevant equivalent experience in lieu of degree. Master's degree in Information Systems, Business Administration (MBA), Technology Management, or a related discipline preferred.
- Ten (10) or more years of progressive leadership experience in enterprise technology, infrastructure, or information technology management.
- Demonstrated success developing and executing enterprise technology strategies that align with organizational goals.
- Experience leading outsourced or managed technology service providers within a co-sourced technology environment.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise infrastructure, cloud platforms, Microsoft technologies, cybersecurity, networking, identity management, collaboration platforms, and digital workplace technologies.
- Experience leading enterprise technology governance, strategic planning, portfolio management, and technology investment decisions.
- Proven experience managing technology budgets, vendor relationships, contract negotiations, and technology procurement.
- Experience leading organizational technology initiatives and change management efforts. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with executive leadership and business stakeholders.
One or more of the following certifications is preferred:
- ITIL Foundation or higher
