You also oversee other technical administrators and workers during the daily operations of the technology department. At a company, a corporate technology director has similar responsibilities but is not focused on educational technology, but rather on infrastructure and applications that enhance business productivity.

What does a technology director do?

Job description

About Us

Potelco, Inc., a subsidiary of Quanta Services, Inc. (NYSE: PWR), was founded in 1965. We specialize in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services, which include designing, estimating, material acquisition, project management, construction, emergency power restoration, system maintenance, and similar services. Our expertise is in power, transmission, distribution, and substation projects. We are a leading full-service provider of power infrastructure, construction, and support services in utility and energy contracting throughout the Pacific Northwest and neighboring states.

We are proud to be working with some of the region's largest energy companies as we continue to modernize their electric systems, move towards de-carbonization, and maintain thousands of miles of overhead and underground lines serving millions of residential and commercial customers. We uphold high safety, productivity, and reliability standards as we work with our customers to provide both current and strategic, forward-thinking energy infrastructure, delivery, and solutions.

About this Role

If you enjoy working with a great group of professionals, are accurate, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and enjoy using your technology leadership and organizational skills, then we have a role for you! Potelco, Inc. seeks a great IT Director to join our team at our company headquarters in Sumner, WA.

The IT Director sits at the center of how Potelco operates, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and partnering with the Potelco executive team to lead the technology function that supports every part of the business, from field crews and project managers to payroll, finance, and client-facing operations. This role owns the direction, the team, and the roadmap for IT, driving the strategic evolution of the department so it can scale and grow alongside the business.

Potelco relies on homegrown field data capture and key business applications, integrated with its ERP, that support the operational backbone of the company. Phase 1 of the modernization of these systems is complete; the IT Director will direct Phase 2, the strategic modernization of the application and underlying platform, while also unifying the IT department itself, historically split between development and operations, into one cohesive, forward-looking organization. If the following interests you, we encourage you to apply!

The salary for this role is $190,000.00/Yr. - USD $220,000.00/Yr. depending on experience and qualifications.

What You'll Do

Lead the IT Organization

  • Lead and grow the IT organization, including the development and IT operations teams, ensuring the department is structured and staffed to support Potelco through its next phase of growth.
  • Develop and mentor the IT leadership team, including the Development Manager, IT Operations Manager, and Data and AI Lead, and set the vision for a modern IT function at Potelco.

Oversee Modernization of IT Department

  • Direct modernization of Potelco's key business applications and technology platform, serving as the technical steward of the roadmap while business units retain ownership of operational processes.
  • Identify practical opportunities for data, analytics, AI, and automation to improve field data capture, process automation, and decision-making across the business.
  • Unify IT strategy across infrastructure, application development, and IT operations, replacing a historically siloed structure with one cohesive department and a culture of proactive engagement rather than reactive support.

Serve as a Strategic Partner

  • Serve as a strategic and operational technology partner to the CFO, the Potelco executive team, and functional leaders, translating business goals into technology roadmaps and technology tradeoffs into business language.
  • Manage IT budgets and vendor relationships with a focus on total cost of ownership and business outcomes.
  • Ensure IT operations and controls support SOX compliance, internal audit readiness, and public company requirements.

Coordinate with Quanta Corporate IT

  • Partner with Quanta Corporate IT on cybersecurity, infrastructure standards, enterprise applications, and shared services, advocating for Potelco's needs while maintaining alignment with enterprise standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Twelve or more years of experience in technology leadership, including at least five years at the Director level or equivalent, in operationally complex, project-driven environments.
  • Strong business acumen, with an understanding of how the business makes money, manages risk, and how technology creates or destroys value.
  • Demonstrated experience building, scaling, and shaping an IT organization, including hiring, structuring, prioritizing, and delivering under real resource constraints.
  • Familiarity with data and analytics strategy and a practical understanding of where data-driven decisions create value in field-based operations.
  • Practical understanding of how AI and automation are changing business operations, from field data capture to process automation to intelligent support.

  • Experience managing IT budgets and vendor relationships with a bias toward total cost of ownership and business outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to work directly with the CFO, the Potelco executive team, field operations leadership, and Quanta Services corporate stakeholders.
