SUMMARY: Under the general supervisionof the Professional Nurse provides direct patient care to the surgicalpatient. Assists the surgical teamwith/by positioning patients, scrubbing, preparing and cleaning instruments andrestocking of supplies. Maintainspatient confidentiality. The core Success Factors include:Instill Trust and Value DifferencesPatient and Community Focus and CollaborateRESPONSIBILITIES:Preparesoperating room in a timely manner with all anticipated supplies, instrumentsand equipment.Scrubson a variety of surgical procedures; anticipates surgeon needs, passesinstruments, sponges and sutures, occasionally assists in suctioning, holdingretractors and cutting sutures.Maintainsstrict aseptic technique and a safe environment for patients and staff.Checksall equipment and instruments for proper functioning prior to each procedure.Demonstratescompetence in care of specimens; follows procedure for care and handling ofspecimens.Accuratelyperforms surgical counts according to policy and procedure; is aware of numbersand kinds of packs/spongesnstruments etc. in a surgical site. Maintains anorderly sterile instrument table according to hospital standard to facilitateefficiency.Assistsin positioning of patients according to department procedure.Cleansand prepares room between cases and after the last case; restocks as needed. Cleansand prepares instruments and equipment for sterilization.Keepaccurate account of medications and solutions used during a procedure.Maytransport patients to and from the patient units, operating room and PACUs.Participatesin hospital/department quality improvement activities. Perform other related dutiesas required. Performs all essential functions with consideration of theage-specific needs of the geriatric, adult, and adolescent patient. Fosters patient and family centered care andNursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital'smission, vision, values, with consideration of the life span, including alldevelopmental stages as well as cultural patterns.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:High School Diploma or GED is requiredCompletion of at least one of the following options is required:Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program, orGraduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program, orCurrent certification as a CST, orCurrent NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered), or3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologistSuccessful completion of a Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training programCurrent BLS Certification is required upon hire Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:None.
