Work EnvironmentInternship, often part-time or temporary, in tech or engineering companiesFull-time, permanent role in various industries like IT, engineering, or manufacturing
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with documentation, learning technical content, supporting senior writersCreating, editing, and managing technical documentation independently

The main difference between a Technical Writing Intern and a Technical Writer lies in experience and responsibilities. Interns are typically students or recent graduates gaining industry exposure, while Technical Writers are experienced professionals responsible for producing comprehensive technical documentation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Writing Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Writing Intern, you need strong written communication skills, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of technical concepts, often supported by coursework in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with documentation tools such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Markdown, and content management systems is typically required. Adaptability, curiosity, and the ability to collaborate with subject matter experts are standout soft skills. These skills are vital for producing clear, accurate documentation that helps users understand complex information and supports organizational goals.

What does a Technical Writing Intern do?

A Technical Writing Intern assists in creating clear and concise documentation for products, software, or services. Their main responsibilities include writing user guides, manuals, online help content, and sometimes internal process documents. They often work closely with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to gather information and ensure accuracy. Interns may also help edit existing materials for clarity and consistency. The goal is to make complex technical information accessible to a broad audience.

What are some common challenges a Technical Writing Intern might face when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

As a Technical Writing Intern, one common challenge is translating complex technical jargon into clear, user-friendly documentation without losing essential details. Interns may also find it challenging to quickly learn unfamiliar software or products. To overcome these obstacles, it's helpful to proactively ask subject matter experts for clarification, review existing documentation for reference, and seek feedback from both technical and non-technical team members. Embracing a collaborative approach and being open to revisions will help you grow and produce effective documentation.

Job description

Bold Thinking. World Changing. At SkyWater, our ingenuity helps improve lives around the world by manufacturing U.S. made semiconductors that are essential ingredients of modern life. Automotive safety enhancements, life-saving medical devices, consumer electronics and American security require semiconductors. Working in our Minnesota headquarters, Florida, or Texas location - employees join together to improve the world.
Explore what's possible. Joining our U.S. - based team means contributing to and learning about the commercialization of some of the most exciting technologies the world has ever seen. We are turning "science fiction" into everyday reality through technologies such as superconducting, 3D integrated circuits or computer chips, carbon nanotubes, photonic logic devices, micro electro-mechanical systems and other emerging device topologies. We manufacture products for aerospace and defense, medical, automotive, consumer and industrial markets, to name a few. Our customers include emerging leaders who rely on our intellectual property security and quality manufacturing services.
Step into the future. SkyWater's values of Integrity, Excellence, Collaboration, Empowerment and Growth Mindset guide us to cultivate an empowered, learning environment. We also invest in developing highly skilled, dedicated employees - and employees who are entering the workforce for the first time, from the military, and a variety of educational backgrounds.
Are you bold thinking? Find your place on our team and help us change the world!
SkyWater Technology is seeking two highly motivated summer interns to support a critical operational excellence initiative within our manufacturing organization. These interns will work directly with manufacturing leaders and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to modernize and improve over 200 existing Operation Instructions (OIs) used on the production floor.
The focus of this role is straightforward: take complex, text-heavy manufacturing specifications and make them clearer, more visual, and easier to train against-without sacrificing technical rigor. This work will directly impact training efficiency, operator effectiveness, and manufacturing flexibility.
This is not a theoretical exercise. The output will be used daily by production teams in a high-reliability manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze existing manufacturing Operation Instructions and specifications
  • Partner with manufacturing engineers, supervisors, and operators to understand process intent and critical requirements
  • Simplify and restructure documentation to improve clarity, consistency, and usability
  • Convert written instructions into:
    • Visual work aids
    • Flowcharts
    • Step-by-step process summaries
  • Leverage approved AI tools to accelerate content restructuring and visualization (with human validation)
  • Ensure all updated documentation aligns with manufacturing standards, safety requirements, and quality expectations
  • Track progress across a large document set and meet defined project milestones
  • Deliver standardized, production-ready documentation at the conclusion of the internship

Required Qualifications
  • Completion of Junior year+ of bachelor's degree in:
    • Engineering (Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical)
    • Operations Management
    • Technical Communication
    • Data/Systems Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and simplify technical content
  • High attention to detail and respect for process discipline
  • Comfortable working in a structured manufacturing environment
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Ability to manage tasks independently and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with:
    • Manufacturing environments, labs, or production facilities
    • Process mapping or flowchart creation
    • Technical documentation or SOP development
  • Familiarity with AI tools for document analysis or content generation
  • Experience with visual tools (Visio, Lucidchart, PowerPoint, Miro, etc.)
  • Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement exposure

What This Internship Delivers
  • Hands-on experience improving real manufacturing systems-not academic exercises
  • Exposure to semiconductor manufacturing operations
  • Direct contribution to reducing training time and operational errors
  • Experience balancing modern AI tools with traditional manufacturing discipline
  • A tangible body of work that will remain in use after the internship ends

What Success Looks Like
By the end of the summer, interns will have:
  • Updated a significant portion of SkyWater's Operation Instructions
  • Created standardized visual aids and flowcharts used on the production floor
  • Improved the clarity and consistency of training materials
  • Left the manufacturing team better equipped to train, cross-train, and execute efficiently

The hourly range for this role is $25.00 - 40.00 per hour. Pay offered is based on many factors including, but not limited to, the job-related experience, skills, education, and credentials of each candidate.
SkyWater offers an exciting environment where the brightest semiconductor minds come together to achieve exceptional results. We offer competitive salary and an opportunity to participate in incentive plans as well other employee financial benefits including 401k match, life insurance and opportunities to purchase SkyWater stock at a discounted rate.
Additionally, SkyWater offers a comprehensive benefits package which promotes a healthy life.
