Technical Talent Sourcer information

What is a technical talent sourcer?

A technical talent sourcer is a professional responsible for identifying, engaging, and attracting qualified candidates for technical roles such as software engineers or IT specialists. They often use tools like applicant tracking systems and social media platforms to build talent pipelines and may conduct initial screenings to assess candidate skills.

How much do technical talent sourcers make?

Technical talent sourcers typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior or specialized sourcers with strong skills in sourcing tools and applicant tracking systems can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $100,000.

What is the difference between Technical Talent Sourcer vs Technical Recruiter?

AspectTechnical Talent SourcerTechnical Recruiter
Primary RoleIdentify and engage potential candidates proactivelyManage the full hiring process, including interviewing and closing candidates
FocusSourcing passive candidates and building talent pipelinesCandidate evaluation, interview coordination, and offer negotiation
Required SkillsResearch, sourcing tools, networkingInterviewing, communication, negotiation
Work EnvironmentTalent acquisition teams, sourcing platformsRecruitment teams, HR departments

While both roles are vital in tech hiring, a Technical Talent Sourcer primarily focuses on sourcing and engaging candidates, whereas a Technical Recruiter manages the entire hiring process from screening to offer. Understanding these differences helps organizations optimize their talent acquisition strategies.

What does a technical talent sourcer do?

A technical talent sourcer identifies and engages qualified candidates for technical roles by sourcing candidates through various channels such as LinkedIn, job boards, and networking. They assess candidate skills, build talent pipelines, and collaborate with recruiters and hiring managers to fill open positions efficiently.

What are some common challenges technical talent sourcers face when identifying qualified candidates for highly specialized roles?

Technical Talent Sourcers often encounter difficulties finding candidates with the exact mix of technical skills and experience required for specialized positions, especially in competitive markets. They may also struggle with limited talent pools, passive candidates who are not actively seeking new opportunities, and the need to quickly adapt to changing client or hiring manager requirements. To overcome these challenges, effective Sourcers leverage a variety of sourcing channels, build strong professional networks, and stay updated on the latest industry trends and technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical talent sourcer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Talent Sourcer, you need strong skills in candidate research, Boolean search, and an understanding of technical job requirements, often supported by experience in recruiting or human resources. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), sourcing platforms like LinkedIn Recruiter, and sometimes certifications in talent sourcing or recruiting are commonly required. Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and persistence are vital soft skills to engage and attract top technical talent. These abilities are crucial for efficiently identifying and connecting with high-quality candidates in a highly competitive tech hiring landscape.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
TALENT SOURCER - TEMPORARY
RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a SpaceX Talent Sourcer, you will build talent pipelines for some of the most technically demanding roles on earth. You'll partner closely with recruiters and hiring managers across Engineering, Manufacturing, and Operations to identify and engage exceptional talent who want to help make life multiplanetary. In many cases, you are candidates' first encounter with SpaceX, and it is your job to represent the company with professionalism, pride, and enthusiasm. We work in teams and focus on collaboration, yet require a high degree of autonomy. So, while you are not expected to go it alone, you are expected to show initiative, take responsibility, and see tasks through to completion.
  • Proactively source passive candidates via X, LinkedIn Recruiter, Boolean search, GitHub, niche technical forums, and other channels
  • Build and maintain strong talent pipelines for hard-to-fill engineering roles
  • Leverage AI-powered sourcing and research tools to increase pipeline speed and quality while maintaining a personal touch
  • Partner with recruiters and hiring managers to understand role requirements and refine sourcing strategy
  • Conduct initial candidate outreach and phone screens to assess interest and qualifications
  • Track sourcing metrics and pipeline health and share relevant data points with recruiters and hiring teams
  • Represent SpaceX's mission and culture compellingly to prospective candidates
  • Stay current on market trends, competitor talent pools, and compensation benchmarks

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and 1+ years of recruiting experience; or associate degree and 2+ years of experience; or 3+ years of professional experience as a recruiter in lieu of a degree

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 1+ years of technical recruiting experience
  • Experience sourcing for engineering, hardware, or technical manufacturing roles
  • Strong Boolean/X-ray search skills
  • Ability to build strong relationships with both hiring managers and candidates
  • Familiarity with ATS platforms and sourcing tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to distinguish between the top 50% and the top 5% of talent within their respective fields
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and a bias toward action

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:
  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
