What is a technical product marketing manager?

A Technical Product Marketing Manager is a professional responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies for complex technical products or services. They act as a bridge between the product development team and the market, ensuring that the product's technical features are communicated effectively to customers and sales teams. Their role involves market research, crafting messaging and positioning, enabling sales teams, and supporting product launches. They often work closely with engineering, sales, and customer success teams to align product offerings with customer needs and market trends.

How does a technical product marketing manager typically collaborate with product and engineering teams?

Technical Product Marketing Managers work closely with product and engineering teams to ensure messaging accurately reflects product capabilities and user needs. They often participate in product roadmap discussions, provide feedback on feature prioritization based on market trends, and translate technical specifications into compelling value propositions for customers. This collaborative approach helps align go-to-market strategies with product development, ensuring successful launches and ongoing product adoption.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical product marketing manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Product Marketing Manager, you need a blend of product marketing expertise, technical acumen, and a solid understanding of customer needs, usually backed by a degree in marketing, business, or a technical field. Proficiency with marketing automation platforms, CRM systems, analytics tools, and sometimes experience with product management frameworks or certifications like Pragmatic Marketing is valuable. Exceptional communication, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic thinking are crucial soft skills that set top performers apart. These competencies enable you to effectively position products, translate complex technical features into customer value, and drive go-to-market success in competitive landscapes.

Technical Product Marketing Manager

At Semperis, our mission is to be a Force for Good. Starting with being a great place to work. We believe that when people feel valued, supported, and empowered, they do their best work. That's why we focus on creating an employee experience rooted in purpose, growth, and balance. Semperis has been recognized as one of America's Fastest-Growing Cybersecurity Companies by the Inc. 5000, a DUNS 100 Top Startup to Work For, and a multi-year Inc. Best Workplace awardee.

What we are looking for:

The Technical Product Marketing Manager will take primary responsibility for translating Semperis' technical advantages into compelling and differentiated messaging for technical and business leader audiences. The primary focus of this role is to enable our direct sales and partner teams to clearly understand and communicate the business value of our comprehensive identity resilience platform. This technical product marketing professional will have extensive experience in:

  • Developing technical content, including whitepapers, research, technical use cases, blogs, and other assets that support our sales and partner enablement programs and educate customers and prospects
  • Developing competitive positioning materials to convey our key differentiators to customers, prospects, and partners, working in collaboration with technical subject matter experts
  • Developing product marketing assets that sales and partner teams can use to communicate the value of our comprehensive identity resilience solutions to their customers and prospects, including data sheets, solution briefs, playbooks, web site content, and presentations
  • Developing product sales training content, including videos, blogs, and decks, for sales teams, partner teams, and solutions architects
  • Building product-specific sales and partner enablement content to ensure our partners and sellers can successfully position Semperis' identity resilience platform in the field.
  • Collaborating with the extended marketing team, product team, and partner program team on product and marketing initiatives, partner launch programs, and success criteria
  • Working as needed with partner teams and field teams to provide content and direction for initiatives, including better-together campaigns and event marketing initiatives

Extensive experience in the tech arena is required, ideally with a focus on identity cybersecurity, particularly Microsoft Active Directory and cloud providers Entra ID, Okta, and Ping. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the ability to create compelling visual and written narratives for technical decision makers in IT and security teams and leaders, including CISOs, CIOs, IT leaders, and SOC leaders.

What you will be doing:

Reporting to the AVP of Product Marketing, the Technical Product Marketing Manager will work closely with the product team and product marketing team to develop crisp, compelling materials that help our partners sell our solutions.

About the Role:

  • Work closely with the product team to translate the technical capabilities our solutions deliver into business value for our sellers, partners, customers, and prospects.
  • Take charge of developing go-to-market (GTM) materials that convey our identity resilience value proposition to global organizations.
  • Support specific GTM sales plays and partner plays with targeted product-specific or competitive messaging
  • To support field "campaign-in-a-box" initiatives, build campaign content including technical materials, sales enablement materials, and customer marketing materials
  • Work closely with product managers and subject matter experts to plan and executive GTM campaigns for upcoming product releases, maintain current product marketing assets, and work with the content strategy team to develop supporting thought leadership content celebrating our identity resilience innovation.
  • Work with cross-functional team to develop better-together campaign content for technology alliance partners and target partners, including sales plays, comparative content, use cases, case studies, etc.
  • Maintain the partner-facing web pages on Semperis.com and work closely with the partner team to ensure materials available on the partner portal are up to date.

About You:

  • 5+ years of experience in product marketing, with proven experience in translating technical material into polished, value-driven messaging that drives engagement and sales.
  • Degree in technical communication, marketing, or computer science/engineering is ideal.
  • Action-oriented project manager who breaks through barriers to get projects completed on time while meeting quality expectations.
  • Affinity for acquiring technical knowledge and creating value-driven, compelling, and technically accurate messaging.
  • Passion for mastering new products and understanding the needs and pain points of our customers through interviews, surveys, conversations with our customer success managers and technical delivery teams, and other sources.
  • Proactive, results-focused owner of your mission, with the willingness to relentlessly pursue what you need from cross-departmental team members to achieve the goal.
  • Experience in translating technical competitive documentation into useful guidance for partners and their customers who are looking for solutions to their problems, including developing partner-facing complementary positioning documents.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write and produce polished, technically accurate, and effective copy for marketing materials including website product pages, blogs, technical educational content, data sheets, technical FAQs, product videos, product communications to customers and partners, slide decks, and sales messaging.
