Job Overview
The Technical Communications Manager leads the technical writing team in the development and update of operation, maintenance, repair instructions, and parts catalogues for Komatsu Construction, Forklift, and Forestry support products. This role is critical to provide operation and repair procedures, and accurate parts lookup for North American manufactured products.
Key Job Responsibilities
  • Leadership: Lead a team with clear vision, fostering high performance with respect and accountability. Deliver on objectives. Support employee development and career growth. Collaborate with HR and leadership to align employees with career paths, succession planning, and organizational development strategies.
  • Manage the creation, revision, and release lifecycle of Operator, Service/Repair manuals using XML DITA, and serviceable parts catalogues for construction and forklift products. Represent the department cross-functionally and Komatsu globally in objectives, projects, and goals.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with teams such engineering, manufacturing, service, field personnel, and marketing for quality content development and feedback. Connect with function leaders, dealers and customers to understand current needs and translate those needs into business requirements within Komatsu North America and global.
  • Lead and support driving One Komatsu efforts to build a unified customer experience across diverse product lines.
  • Information Development: Review, manage and enhance content development quality, processes, media, and standards. Review and manage parts book content development process for accuracy, efficiency, and meeting customer expectations. Align business to corporate objectives for service part delivery. Collaborate with technical communication leadership team to define SLQDC standards and align product resources.
  • Information Management: Review, manage, and enhance information management including content libraries, product structures, metadata management, reuse mechanisms in alignment with information architect.
  • Project management - Manage all US construction, forklift, technical content project release, including new product introductions and model changes. Plan, monitor, and complete multiple projects, coordinating with stakeholders in content availability and support. Lead cross-functional and global projects to support SLQDC.
  • Technology Integration: Strong capacity for learning and understanding content and part creation tools such as CMS systems, XML editors, terminology tools, graphics programs, parts management databases, and Komatsu owned systems.
  • Monitor and Enhance Content Effectiveness: Use feedback, assessments, and performance metrics to measure both parts and service writing team impact and end users impact. Prepare and report to KPIs, metrics, and future strategy roadmaps for upper management.
  • Manage Budgets and Resources: Budget management and reporting. Manage internal resources, vendor relationships and systems to ensure effective on-time technical content. Estimate and submit yearly budget requests.
  • Innovation & Standards: Innovate with industry trends, best practices, and technology growth. Research and adopt new technologies, methodologies, and media.

Qualifications/Requirements
    • Bachelor's in Engineering, Technical Communications, related degree, or related work/military experience and 7 years technical writing experience in related field.
    • Possibly 5-15% travel for training, projects, factory alignment, global alignment, GEMBA.
    • Strong root cause analysis with strong problem-solving skills.
    • Strong command of the English language; grammar, editing
    • Structured based authoring experience. (DITA, S1000D, other)
    • Technical aptitude or ability to learn Komatsu machine systems or technical content.
