Position Summary:

We are seeking a dynamic and technically proficient Senior Technical Business Developer to lead the expansion of our Grid Automation portfolio in the U.S. market. This role bridges advanced grid technologies and a focused market penetration strategy, driving growth through utility customer and key partner engagement, stakeholder intelligence, and solution development. This position reports directly to the Product Marketing Director and functionally to the Global Portfolio Management of Grid Components.

This is a remote position. Candidates can be located anywhere in the US, with preference for Cary, NC or Houston, TX.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Market strategy leadership - Drive U.S. growth by identifying new utility/industrial automation opportunities, shaping market penetration strategy, and securing product homologation with key utilities.

  • Technical engagement - Act as a gridautomation SME, lead presales technical activities, and support solution design across architectures, protection systems, and integration workflows.

  • Standards influence - Contribute to vPAC and IEEE working groups, representing the company to help shape emerging grid automation standards and interoperability frameworks.

  • Ecosystem & innovation Build strategic partnerships, represent the company at industry forums, and channel field insights to evolve offerings like SSC600, SMU600, and CogniEN.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in technical business development, preferably in grid automation or power systems.

  • Deep understanding of U.S. utility market dynamics, standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC 61850), and digital substation architectures.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Experience with SaaS or subscription-based business models in the energy sector.

  • Familiarity with DERMS, DLR, and network state estimation technologies.

  • Ability to travel up to 30% - domestic and international - may be required.

Time off

ABB provides 11 paid holidays. Vacation is provided based on years of service for hourly and non-exempt positions. Salaried exempt positions are provided vacation under a permissive time away policy.

While base salary is determined by things such as the successful applicant's qualifications and experience, this position is expected to pay between $119,000 and $190,400 annually and is eligible for a short-term incentive plan/annual bonus.
