What is a technical enablement manager?

A Technical Enablement Manager is responsible for equipping technical teams—such as sales engineers, support staff, and consultants—with the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to effectively perform their roles. This includes developing and delivering training programs, creating documentation, and ensuring teams are up to date with the latest products, technologies, and best practices. They act as a bridge between product development and customer-facing teams to ensure technical accuracy and alignment. Their goal is to improve team performance, customer satisfaction, and overall organizational efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical enablement manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Enablement Manager, you need a deep understanding of technical concepts, experience in training and enablement, and often a background in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with learning management systems, content development tools, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Salesforce Certified Instructor are typically valuable. Exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational skills help you translate complex topics and manage cross-functional initiatives effectively. These skills are crucial for ensuring teams are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to drive product adoption and customer success.

How does a technical enablement manager typically collaborate with product and sales teams to drive successful enablement initiatives?

Technical Enablement Managers often act as a bridge between product, sales, and sometimes customer success teams. They work closely with product teams to deeply understand new features and translate technical details into accessible training materials. At the same time, they partner with sales to identify knowledge gaps and deliver targeted enablement sessions or resources. Frequent cross-functional meetings and feedback loops are common, ensuring that training aligns with evolving product capabilities and market needs. This collaborative approach helps ensure sales teams are confident and effective when engaging with customers.

What is the difference between Technical Enablement Manager vs Sales Engineer?

Job description

Manager, Field Sales Engineering & Technical Enablement

#4663

Salt Lake City, Utah, United States

What We Need:

The Manager, Field Sales Engineering leads a high-performing team that serves as the technical backbone of our sales organization. In this critical leadership role, you will lead Field Sales Engineers (FSEs) and a dedicated Technical Trainer, driving excellence across technical discovery, solution design, internal/external enablement, and Proof of Concept (POC) stages within complex enterprise environments.

You are responsible for building scalable operational frameworks—authoring Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to drive field consistency, managing strategic 3rd-party vendor and partner relationships, and ensuring your team successfully navigates technical integrations and network deployment challenges. As a strategic partner to Sales, you will lead a team that architects end-to-end solutions, modernizes workflows, and ensures seamless connectivity across mission-critical systems.

What You'll Be Doing: 1. Team Leadership & Technical Mentorship
  • Direct Management: Lead, coach, and scale a national team of Field Sales Engineers and a Technical Trainer.
  • Technical Upskilling: Ensure the team remains subject matter experts in core technologies, hardware integrations, and system workflows.
  • Resource Allocation: Strategically assign FSEs to high-value accounts based on technical complexity, territory, and sales priority.
  • Performance Management: Set clear KPIs, foster professional growth, and build a culture of continuous learning and operational excellence.
2. Training, Enablement & SOP Management
  • Technical Enablement Strategy: Directly manage the Technical Trainer to build, maintain, and deliver comprehensive training programs for internal teams (FSEs, Sales, Technical Support) and external clients/partners.
  • SOP Architecture: Establish a strong foundation for technical documentation by authoring, standardizing, and enforcing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for site surveys, hardware deployments, POC execution, and field troubleshooting.
  • Operational Excellence: Continuously audit and update SOPs to streamline technical sales operations, reduce deployment friction, and eliminate installation errors through rigorous pre-sales validation.
3. Strategic Sales Support & 3rd Party Relationship Management
  • Solution Architecture: Partner with Sales Leadership to design enterprise-wide workflows and modern solutions that solve complex customer challenges.
  • POC Excellence: Standardize the Proof of Concept process to ensure prospects see immediate, measurable value during hardware and software trials.
  • 3rd Party Management: Serve as the primary technical liaison for strategic 3rd-party vendors, hardware partners, and integration providers; negotiate technical scope, oversee partner certifications, and ensure seamless third-party service delivery.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Product Feedback Loop: Act as the "Voice of the Field" to Product Management, translating field requirements and customer challenges into actionable product roadmap inputs.
  • Escalation Leadership: Establish and maintain a robust technical bridge between Field Sales Engineering, Technical Support, and 3rd-party partners; serve as the final escalation point for complex technical issues to drive permanent resolutions.

#LI-EA1

What You Will Need To Be Successful:

Experience:

  • 5+ years in Technical Sales, Field Engineering, or Solutions Architecture.
  • 2–3+ years in a leadership/management capacity managing technical teams.
  • Proven experience developing technical training programs and creating formal SOPs/technical documentation.
  • Direct experience managing 3rd-party vendors, hardware partners, or external service providers.

Education: BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Strong operational background with a focus on standardization, process optimization, and documentation.
  • Demonstrated capability to coach, mentor, and elevate technical talent and technical trainers.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% for customer visits, meetings, and team alignment.
