Technical Copy Editor information

What does a technical copy editor do?

A Technical Copy Editor reviews technical documents, such as manuals, reports, and instructional materials, to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency. They check for grammatical errors, proper terminology usage, and adherence to style guides while making sure complex information is presented in a way that's easy to understand. Their work helps maintain the quality and reliability of technical content for both specialist and general audiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical copy editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Copy Editor, you need excellent command of grammar, style, and technical language, often supported by a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with editing tools such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and content management systems, as well as knowledge of style guides like APA or Chicago Manual of Style, is typically expected. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring clarity and accuracy in complex documents. These skills and tools are crucial for producing high-quality, error-free technical content that meets professional standards and supports user understanding.

How does a technical copy editor typically collaborate with subject matter experts during the content review process?

Technical Copy Editors frequently work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure that highly specialized material is both accurate and accessible to the intended audience. This collaboration often involves reviewing drafts, clarifying technical terminology, and resolving ambiguities or inconsistencies. Effective communication skills are essential, as editors must balance editorial standards with the integrity of the technical content. It's common to participate in review meetings, provide annotated feedback, and facilitate revisions, ensuring the final document meets both editorial and technical requirements.

The Company:
VeSync is a portfolio company with brands that cover different categories of health & wellness products. We wouldn't be surprised if you have one of our Levoit air purifiers in your living room or a COSORI air fryer whipping up healthy and delicious meals for you every night.

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency across high-visibility print and digital content. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams which include marketing, technical writing, legal, design, and global content partners-to uphold brand voice, improve content usability, and ensure cohesive messaging across all consumer touchpoints.
The Copy Editor is a key stakeholder in the Copy & Editorial team, not only providing edits and reviewing content but also provides strategic guidance, oversees content quality across campaigns, and acts as a subject matter expert in editing standards, style guidelines, and industry best practices. What you will do at VeSync:

  • Conduct final campaign-level reviews to ensure cohesive messaging, maintain brand tone, correct errors, and uphold high editorial quality across all deliverables.
  • Maintain exceptional attention to detail in a fast-paced environment to ensure all print and digital content is error-free and user-friendly.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, evolving style guides, and best practices in editing and publishing; present findings to the team and initiate improvements to internal workflow.
  • Oversee rewrites and restructuring of marketing and some technical content to improve clarity, readability, flow, and consumer usability while preserving intended meaning and tone.
  • Enforce and uphold brand voice, editorial guidelines, and copyright/ethical standards across all published materials.
  • Act as the point person for final editing decisions, ensuring continuity and quality in content output.
  • Modify, review, and implement updates to internal style guides; conduct competitor research and share insights to elevate team standards.
  • Own editing strategy and execution across packaging, marketing, retail, and product copy to ensure consistency and alignment with industry expectations.
  • Provide strong editorial feedback and partner closely with marketing and technical copywriters to execute best practices.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on Marketing content, including formatting, phrasing, SEO, and style guide application.
  • Manage high-visibility and high-complexity content, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and market competitiveness.
  • Liaise with CHN content writers, U.S. content teams, and project managers to ensure consistent language and asset uniformity across global content.
  • Review and refine third-party microcopy to meet brand and usability standards.
  • Collaborate with Legal and Marketing teams to ensure claims accuracy, compliance, and correct trademark usage.
  • Monitor, suggest, and implement consistent marketing language and phrasing across all brand platforms.
  • Act as the editing lead for go-to-market campaigns, ensuring unified messaging across all deliverables.
  • Work closely with cross-functional creative teams to contribute to campaign concepts and support brand storytelling initiatives.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of marketing strategy, audience targeting, and the content needs of digital platforms.
