What is a tech manager?

Tech Managers, also known as Technical Managers, are professionals who oversee technical teams and projects within an organization. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading technology-related activities, ensuring that projects are completed on time and meet organizational standards. Tech Managers bridge the gap between technical staff and upper management by translating business needs into technical solutions. They also mentor team members, manage resources, and help set strategic direction for technology initiatives.

How do tech managers typically balance hands-on technical work with people management responsibilities?

Tech Managers often face the challenge of balancing their technical expertise with the demands of leading a team. In most organizations, they spend a portion of their time on code reviews, architectural decisions, and technical problem-solving, while also dedicating significant energy to mentoring, conducting one-on-ones, and facilitating team collaboration. The exact split can vary depending on company size and project phase, but successful Tech Managers prioritize clear communication and delegation to ensure both technical goals and team development are met. This role offers opportunities to influence both technology direction and team culture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tech manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Manager, you need a solid background in software development or IT, leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), cloud platforms, and sometimes certifications such as PMP or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding Tech Managers apart. These competencies are crucial for effectively leading technical teams, ensuring successful project delivery, and aligning technology initiatives with business goals.

This role leads a team of 1-2 marketing technology professionals responsible for marketing automation operations, platform administration, journey execution, troubleshooting, governance, and optimization. The manager is expected to actively coach SFMC users, review and guide journey and audience builds, establish quality standards, and contribute directly when work requires handsโ€‘on platform expertise. Success in this role requires the ability to lead through influence and handsโ€‘on partnership, balancing team leadership and strategic thinking with a willingness to work directly alongside team members to solve complex marketing technology challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing Technology Strategy & Platform Ownership. Develop, prioritize, and advocate for the marketing technology roadmap in partnership with Product and Engineering stakeholders. Partner with Product and Engineering teams to prioritize marketing technology requirements and advocate for business needs. Evaluate emerging technologies, AI capabilities, automation opportunities, and process improvements that increase marketing effectiveness and operational efficiency. Establish scalable processes, governance frameworks, documentation standards, and operational best practices.

Crossโ€‘Functional Leadership & Stakeholder Management. Serve as the primary liaison between Marketing and Product, Engineering, Sales Operations, Legal, and other business teams. Translate business requirements into technical specifications and technical concepts into actionable recommendations for nonโ€‘technical audiences. Facilitate collaboration across teams to support platform enhancements, integrations, and marketing capabilities. Influence decisions and priorities through strong communication, problemโ€‘solving, and stakeholder management.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud & Marketing Technology Operations. Serve as the dayโ€‘toโ€‘day owner and administrator of Salesforce Marketing Cloud and related marketing technologies. Regularly work handsโ€‘on within Salesforce Marketing Cloud to build, review, troubleshoot, and optimize journeys, automations, audience segments, data extensions, and campaign workflows in partnership with team members. Oversee platform configuration, user access, governance, quality assurance, troubleshooting, and system health. Partner with Product and Engineering teams on platform integrations, data requirements, and more complex technical enhancements. Establish and maintain operational processes that support reliability, scalability, compliance, and data quality. Lead issue identification, troubleshooting, testing, and resolution efforts. Develop standards and best practices for journey design, segmentation, testing, deployment, and platform usage.

Team Leadership & Development. Provide handsโ€‘on coaching and technical leadership to SFMC users, including guidance on journey design, audience segmentation, automation setup, data extension usage, QA, troubleshooting, and platform best practices. Manage a team of marketing technology professionals responsible for platform administration, campaign support, journey execution, troubleshooting, quality assurance, and optimization. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement. Establish team operating procedures, quality standards, and performance expectations.

Recommend and implement improvements that increase engagement, conversion, operational efficiency, and customer experience outcomes.

Change Management & Enablement. Develop documentation, governance processes, training materials, and enablement resources. Communicate technology updates, roadmap initiatives, best practices, and platform enhancements to stakeholders.
