What are Tech Dispatchers?

Tech Dispatchers are professionals responsible for coordinating and assigning technical support or service requests within companies. They act as a central point of contact, receiving incoming calls or tickets, prioritizing issues based on urgency, and dispatching the appropriate technicians to resolve problems. Their role is vital for ensuring timely responses to technical issues and maximizing the efficiency of service teams. Tech Dispatchers often use specialized software to track requests and communicate updates to both clients and technicians.

What is the difference between Tech Dispatcher vs Service Coordinator?

AspectTech DispatcherService Coordinator
CredentialsTypically requires a high school diploma or equivalent; certifications in dispatching or logistics are a plusUsually requires a high school diploma; certifications in customer service or office administration are common
Work EnvironmentField and office-based, coordinating technicians and service callsOffice-based, managing customer appointments and service schedules
Employer & IndustryUsed in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and tech service industriesCommon in service industries like HVAC, appliance repair, and maintenance services

Both roles involve coordinating service activities, but Tech Dispatchers focus on assigning technicians and managing field operations, while Service Coordinators handle customer communication and scheduling. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right position in the service industry.

How does a Tech Dispatcher typically prioritize incoming service requests during busy periods?

As a Tech Dispatcher, managing multiple simultaneous requests is a common challenge. Prioritization is usually based on factors such as the severity of the issue, the potential impact on business operations, and customer SLAs (service-level agreements). Dispatchers must quickly assess ticket details, communicate with technicians for availability, and sometimes escalate urgent cases to specialized teams. Strong organizational skills and clear communication are essential to ensure the most critical tasks are addressed promptly while maintaining overall workflow efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tech Dispatcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Dispatcher, you generally need strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and familiarity with dispatch procedures, typically supported by a high school diploma or relevant experience. Proficiency with dispatch software, ticketing systems, and communication tools like radios and phones is essential. Excellent communication, multitasking, and stress management skills help Tech Dispatchers coordinate effectively and remain calm under pressure. These skills are crucial for ensuring timely response, efficient technician deployment, and high-quality service delivery.

Base Salary Range: $19.75-23.80/hr
Purpose of the Role
The Dispatcher plays a key role in ensuring the efficient, safe, and timely transportation of AV equipment to and from customer and vendor locations. Reporting to the Floor Manager, this position is responsible for coordinating CDL and Non-CDL drivers, optimizing transportation logistics, and maintaining detailed delivery and return documentation-all while promoting safety and accountability.

  • Trip Planning & Route Optimization
Create efficient and cost-effective routing plans to ensure timely pickups and deliveries while complying with legal parameters (weight limits, speed regulations, and driver hours).
  • Driver Communication & Safety
Reinforce safety compliance daily. Maintain open communication with drivers and the Floor Manager to ensure any incidents, delays, or unexpected events are reported immediately.
  • Shipping & Receiving Coordination
Handle incoming and outgoing shipments through approved carriers (FedEx, UPS, etc.). Prepare labels, complete logs, and maintain organized records for each transaction.
  • Load Oversight & Freight Handling
Assist in loading/unloading trucks, ensuring secure positioning of AV equipment to prevent damage in transit. Oversee staging and identification of returned products using color-coded systems.
  • Returns & Strike Coordination
Dispatch drivers for return pickups post-show. Ensure returned gear is staged correctly and documented as per operational procedures.
  • Vehicle Maintenance Oversight
Develop and enforce schedules for routine vehicle inspections. Hold drivers accountable for inspection accuracy and completion. Process run-related expenses as needed.
  • Freight Logistics Support
Coordinate air freight pickups and venue deliveries as directed by technicians or management. Arrange follow-on shipments to other shows or home base locations when required.

  • Ability to multitask and respond to real-time logistics needs
  • Forklift experience and/or DOT knowledge is a plus
  • Experience in AV, logistics, or warehouse operations preferred
