At TCS Communications, LLC, as an Underground Groundhand, you'll support the construction and installation of underground fiber and telecom systems while working hands-on in the field every day. You'll assist with digging, cable placement, equipment operation, material handling, and site restoration, all while working outdoors in various weather conditions. This is a physically active role where you'll learn industry-standard skills, operate tools and machinery, and be part of a crew that values safety, teamwork, and pride in quality work. What you'll do
  • Support all phases of underground telecom construction, including loading and unloading materials, delivering equipment to work sites, digging trenches, potholing, backfilling, and preparing areas for cable placement
  • Install underground fiber/telecommunications cabling and assist with operating hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment (such as trenchers, compactors, vacs, and locating tools)
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized work zones, including traffic and jobsite safety setups, and help restore grounds and surfaces after construction
  • Perform physical labor in all weather conditions, including lifting 60+ lbs regularly, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined spaces or remote areas
  • Follow work plans, safety procedures, and direction from crew leads and foremen to ensure efficient and high-quality work
  • Communicate clearly with team members to support safe operations and problem solving on the job
  • Complete basic daily reporting such as production logs, jobsite notes, and equipment checks
  • Use proper PPE and equipment daily and participate in required safety meetings and training
  • Take initiative to support the crew with any additional labor or tasks needed to complete the job safely and on time

What you'll need
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Valid driver's license with reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass all pre-employment screenings
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to perform physical labor, lift 55+ lbs, and work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Strong communication skills & ability to follow direction/safety procedures
  • Reliable, safety-minded, and able to work as part of a crew
  • Previous experience with hand tools, construction equipment, or utility/construction work preferred (we will train motivated candidates)
  • Previous experience in telecom, utility, construction, or related field
  • Familiarity with underground locating equipment or fiber installation tools
  • Experience operating small construction equipment (trencher, mini excavator, compactor, vac truck, etc.)
  • Basic mechanical or maintenance skills a plus
  • Ability to read jobsite plans, maps, or utility prints
  • Strong teamwork mindset and willingness to support various tasks on site

Physical abilities & exposures
  • Routinely: work at heights, occasional entry into attics and crawl spaces and alone in remote locations, operate vehicle and heavy machinery; squeeze, fine hand motion, bend, stoop, stand, walk, climb stairs, and lift up to 55 pounds without assistance.
  • Occasionally: use ladder, keyboard and mouse
