What is a tax law internship?

A tax law internship is a temporary position, often for law students or recent graduates, that provides practical experience working in the field of tax law. Interns typically assist attorneys with legal research, drafting documents, and supporting tax-related casework for clients, businesses, or government agencies. These internships offer valuable insight into tax regulations, compliance, policy, and litigation, helping individuals build essential skills and professional connections for a future career in tax law.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a tax law internship?

As a Tax Law Intern, you can expect to assist with legal research on current tax regulations, prepare memos or summaries for attorneys, analyze case documents, and help draft responses to client inquiries. You may also be involved in reviewing tax filings, supporting attorneys in client meetings, and collaborating with other interns or paralegals on team assignments. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to the daily workings of a tax law practice and helps develop your understanding of complex tax issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax law intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Law Intern, you typically need a strong academic background in law with coursework or interest in tax law, along with analytical and research skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in Microsoft Office are commonly expected.
