Nelnet is nationally-recognized solar tax credit investor, investing for its own balance sheet as well as on behalf of others. In addition to earning a return on these direct investments, Nelnet Tax Credit Services (NTCS) earns an advisory fee based on assets managed and consulting fees for value-adds generated for our solar developers. Nelnet also co-develops and co-owns select solar projects to enjoy the long-term cashflows generated by such projects.
This role is responsible for the financial management and reporting of NTCS's operations and investments, assisting with tax credit compliance and oversight, facilitating investor relations and reporting, project budgeting and forecasting, tax credit allocation and documentation, internal controls and process improvements/automation, collaboration and communication with internal and external stakeholders, developing standard operating procedures, creating reporting dashboards, managing risk, and assisting with team training and leadership.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure propriety of accounting entries related to the financial reporting of tax credit investment portfolios, ensuring compliance with GAAP. Effectively manage the accounting and financial statements for multiple legal entities, including intercompany transactions, minority interests, revenue recognition, and HLBV accounting. Effectively track and report on investment performance (ROI, IRR, NPV, etc).
Coordinate and oversee financial statement audits and internal controls. Responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data related to tax credit investments. Identify areas for process improvements in managing tax credit projects and investor reporting.
Assist team members with tax credit compliance and oversight of projects. Assist with adherence to program-specific rules maintaining eligibility for tax credits, meeting deadlines, and proper documentation. Work closely with other team members as well as other legal and tax advisors to ensure proper structuring of investment and tax credit claims.
Prepare investor reports, ensuring timely and accurate updates on tax credit investments, including performance, projected returns, and compliance status. Manage communication with investors, providing insights into the financial health and progress of their investments. Coordinate the distribution of tax credits to investors, including all tax-related reporting and other disclosure.
Assist with review of models and other constructs to develop new, innovative products within the tax credit investment space. Present the summary of such ideas, balancing risks and opportunities. Demonstrate the ability to analyze financial scenarios of various opportunities and business models.
Manage the budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting related to the operations of the NTCS division, including consulting fee revenue, advisory fee revenue, project ownership, investment performance, and all related operating expenses.
Coordinate with external auditors, solar development partners, third-party investors, tax consultants, legal advisors, and internal teams to facilitate tax credit reporting and compliance. Collaborate with accounting, finance, and project teams to ensure seamless execution of investment strategies.
Preparation and review of cashflow and income statement forecasting. Report historical results and future projections in a meaningful way with a lens toward optimizing the business through key performance indicators, structural efficiencies, dashboards, and financial acumen.
Identify potential risks related to tax credit investments and work on strategies to mitigate these risks. Ensure all financial operations and transactions are legally compliant and consistent with investor agreements.
Lead, mentor, and provide guidance to junior accounting and finance staff within NTCS. Stay updated on changes in both GAAP provisions related to HLBV, VIE, proportional amortization, and minority interest accounting to ensure the company's investments remain compliant.

**Pay Range for this role is - $105,000 to $150,000 DOE

EDUCATION:
4 year college degree in accounting or finance required, Advanced degree and related certifications preferred

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of experience in finance and/or accounting, tax experience is preferred.Prior leadership and supervisory experience required.
