Tax Controversy


Position Overview

The Tax Controversy role is responsible for managing all aspects of tax disputes and audits with federal, state, and local taxing authorities. This position requires strong technical tax knowledge, strategic thinking, and the ability to represent clients in examinations, appeals, and negotiations to ensure compliance and minimize tax exposure.


Key Responsibilities

  • Represent clients before the IRS and state tax authorities during audits, appeals, and examinations
  • Research and analyze complex tax issues to develop defensible positions and strategies
  • Prepare written responses to audit inquiries, notices, and information requests
  • Manage and organize all documentation related to tax controversies, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Collaborate with internal accounting, finance, and legal teams to assess tax risks and exposure
  • Draft protest letters, position papers, and settlement proposals
  • Monitor changes in tax law, regulations, and court decisions impacting cases
  • Advise leadership and clients on tax controversy trends, compliance, and risk mitigation
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with taxing authorities
  • Support broader tax compliance and planning initiatives as needed


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field (JD or LLM preferred)
  • CPA, JD, or Enrolled Agent designation strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in tax controversy, audit defense, or a similar role
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state tax procedures and audit processes
  • Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills
  • Strong communication and negotiation abilities
  • Experience in public accounting, law firm, or corporate tax environment preferred


Preferred Skills

  • Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines simultaneously
  • Familiarity with IRS administrative practices and dispute resolution methods
  • Experience with tax research tools (CCH, RIA Checkpoint, LexisNexis)
