Job description

Want to wake up excited about coming to work and building something awesome?

Tanglewood Conservatories is looking for an experienced Glazier / Sheet Metal Fabricator to join our team of skilled craftspeople designing, building, and installing one of a kind conservatories, greenhouses, skylights, domes, and other custom glass architecture.

One project may have you installing an intricate custom skylight. Another may take you across the country to help assemble a handcrafted conservatory or greenhouse on a private estate. The work changes, the details matter, and every project is built to a standard that requires skill, patience, problem solving, and pride in craftsmanship.

If you are someone who likes standing back at the end of the day and thinking, I helped build that,” you may fit in very well here.

What You Will Do

You will work both in our Denton, Maryland shop and in the field with our installation team. Work may include:

  • Cutting, fitting, setting, and installing architectural glass
  • Glazing custom windows, doors, skylights, conservatories, greenhouses, and other glass structures
  • Reading drawings, plans, and specifications
  • Measuring and laying out work accurately
  • Installing insulated, laminated, tempered, and decorative glass
  • Fabricating and installing custom sheet metal components, flashing, trim, and related architectural details
  • Cutting, shaping, and forming copper, aluminum, and stainless steel
  • Soldering and joining copper components
  • Working alongside skilled woodworkers, metal fabricators, installers, and other craftspeople
  • Troubleshooting unique field conditions and finding practical solutions
  • Traveling throughout the United States for project installations

Who We Are Looking For

Experience matters, but so does how you approach the work. We are looking for someone who:

  • Has glazing, architectural metal, roofing, millwork installation, or related construction experience
  • Is comfortable working with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Can read drawings and understand dimensions and details
  • Has strong measuring and layout skills
  • Takes pride in clean, precise workmanship
  • Notices when something is not quite right and fixes it
  • Can solve problems without cutting corners
  • Works well as part of a highly skilled team
  • Has a positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Is comfortable traveling nationally for installations
  • Wants to continue learning and expanding their skills

Experience working with copper, aluminum, stainless steel, sheet metal, or custom architectural glass is especially valuable.

BENEFITS AND ADDITIONAL TRAINING ARE AVAILABLE!

The Kind of Person Who Does Well Here

  • You do not have to come from the conservatory industry. Very few people do.
  • You might currently be a glazier, sheet metal mechanic, architectural installer, roofer, carpenter, metal fabricator, or experienced construction craftsperson.
  • What matters most is that you know how to build, understand the importance of details, enjoy solving unusual construction challenges, and care about the quality of the finished product.
  • Our projects are custom. That means there is always something new to figure out and something new to build.

Why Tanglewood?

For more than 30 years, Tanglewood Conservatories has designed and handcrafted extraordinary glass architecture for private residences and distinctive properties throughout the United States and internationally.

Our work combines traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering, and much of what we build cannot simply be ordered from a catalog or assembled from standard components. It is handcrafted and one-of-a-kind.

You will work alongside experienced craftspeople who care deeply about their work and have built careers around creating things that are meant to last for generations.

One member of our installation team originally joined Tanglewood expecting to stay only through the winter:

I myself worked construction most of my life and even had my own business. I started working here thinking maybe I would just hang in here for the winter. But I found working on these projects with these guys was so fulfilling that I've made a career out of it. You may be like me and stay for a while.”

Company Description

WE ARE ARCHITECTS,
DESIGNERS, AND CRAFTSMEN.

Welcome to Tanglewood Conservatories, heirs to a two-hundred-year-old tradition of extraordinary design and craftsmanship. Our work is inspired by the elegant, historic glasshouses of the world. Our craft teams come from the lineage of master shipbuilders who created the beautiful wooden boats of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay region.

Tanglewood was founded in 1995 by architect-builder and textile design team, Alan and Nancy Virts. Following corporate careers and travel abroad, they became enamored with traditional glass architecture and established Tanglewood with the goal of creating uncommonly unique conservatories that combine historical inspiration with state-of-the-art technology and masterful craftsmanship.

Our expertise is a specialty. Drawing on extensive experience, we custom tailor every design to our client’s site and imagination. Getting each project right – exactly right, is what we do. From initial sketches to finished structure, the process is interactive and collaborative.

Our clients are often surprised and delighted to learn that they have many more choices than they originally thought. Our greatest satisfaction is creating a conservatory that is beautiful, functional, and uniquely yours.

Our employee participate in the excitement of planning, building, and installing exquisite, one-of-a-kind masterpieces.
