What is a talent manager?

A talent manager works with artists in the entertainment industry. In this role, your job is to manage and develop the careers of your clients, help them decide on an artistic direction, and guide them towards the best new opportunities. Your primary duties involve offering creative guidance, promoting performances and new works, and assisting your clients to maintain their professional image. Some talent managers also manage their client’s finances by collecting fees, reporting income, and keeping accurate financial records. You most likely have several clients at once in this field.

What is a talent manager?

A Talent Manager is a professional who represents and guides artists, entertainers, athletes, or other talents in their careers. They help clients find opportunities, negotiate contracts, and make strategic decisions to enhance their careers. Talent Managers often handle scheduling, public relations, and networking, ensuring their clients reach their full potential. Their role is different from that of an agent, as they focus on long-term career development rather than just securing individual jobs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a talent manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Talent Manager, you need expertise in recruitment, talent development, and workforce planning, often supported by a degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), HR information systems (HRIS), and certifications like SHRM or HRCI are highly beneficial. Outstanding interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and negotiation abilities help Talent Managers build trust and foster strong relationships. These skills ensure effective talent acquisition and retention, driving organizational success through a skilled and engaged workforce.

What are some common challenges talent managers face when balancing client needs with organizational goals?

Talent Managers often navigate the delicate balance between advocating for their clients' best interests and aligning with the strategic objectives of their organization or agency. This can involve negotiating contracts, managing expectations, and ensuring that both parties' goals are met. Clear communication, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to problem-solve under pressure are essential for success in this role. Additionally, Talent Managers frequently collaborate with legal, marketing, and project teams to ensure seamless service delivery while maintaining positive client relationships.

What is the difference between Talent Manager vs Recruiter?

AspectTalent Manager

While both roles focus on staffing and workforce development, a Talent Manager oversees the entire talent lifecycle, including employee development, retention, and succession planning. A Recruiter primarily focuses on sourcing, screening, and hiring candidates for specific roles. Talent Managers often work closely with HR and leadership to align talent strategies with business goals, whereas Recruiters concentrate on filling immediate vacancies.

What degree do you need to be a talent manager?

A talent manager typically does not require a specific degree, but many have a bachelor's degree in fields such as business, marketing, communications, or entertainment management. Relevant skills include strong interpersonal, negotiation, and organizational abilities, and some may pursue certifications in talent management or related areas to enhance their credentials.

Job description

About JUS Official Services

JUS Official Services is a Talent Management & Growth Firm dedicated to helping creators, artists, influencers, performers, and digital talent build stronger brands, expand their audiences, develop professional careers, and create sustainable long-term opportunities.

We believe talent management should be about building with the creator, not controlling the creator. Our managers work alongside clients to develop strategy, identify opportunities, strengthen professional positioning, coordinate growth initiatives, and help turn creative potential into measurable progress.

As a Talent Manager, you will serve as a strategic partner and advocate for the talent you represent. You will help your clients determine where they want to go, develop a roadmap to get there, and coordinate the resources necessary to maximize their potential.

The Role

JUS Official Services is seeking ambitious, organized, entrepreneurial Talent Managers to join our growing management division.

Talent Managers are responsible for managing and developing an assigned roster of clients within their area of specialization. You will work directly with talent to understand their goals, develop individualized growth strategies, coordinate opportunities, monitor progress, and help build the client's brand, identity, audience, and professional career to the fullest extent possible.

This is not simply a social media management position.

You are expected to think like a career strategist, business representative, brand developer, opportunity coordinator, and advocate for your clients.

You will be responsible for helping talent answer questions such as:

  • Who are we building this person into?
  • What does their brand represent?
  • Who is their audience?
  • How do we grow that audience?
  • What opportunities should they pursue?
  • What opportunities should they decline?
  • How can we improve their professional positioning?
  • What partnerships, sponsorships, bookings, collaborations, or monetization opportunities make sense?
  • What should their next 6, 12, and 24 months look like?
  • What resources does the client need to reach the next level?

Core Responsibilities

Client Management

  • Maintain professional relationships with assigned clients.
  • Understand each client's goals, creative identity, strengths, weaknesses, and long-term ambitions.
  • Serve as the primary management contact for assigned talent.
  • Maintain regular communication and progress reviews.
  • Help clients establish realistic short-term and long-term objectives.
  • Advocate for the client's interests within JUS Official Services.
  • Protect the client's creative autonomy and ensure their voice remains central to major decisions.

Brand & Identity Development

  • Help clients define and strengthen their personal or professional brand.
  • Develop strategies for positioning clients within their respective industries.
  • Identify opportunities to differentiate clients from competitors.
  • Assist with professional bios, portfolios, media kits, positioning, and public presentation.
  • Ensure the client's public identity remains consistent across platforms.

Growth Strategy

  • Develop individualized growth strategies for every client.
  • Analyze audience development and platform performance.
  • Identify areas for improvement and opportunities for expansion.
  • Coordinate content, marketing, promotional, and audience-growth initiatives with applicable JUS teams.
  • Establish measurable goals and track progress toward those goals.
  • Continuously adapt strategies based on performance, industry trends, and client objectives.

Opportunity Development

  • Identify potential collaborations, partnerships, sponsorships, bookings, appearances, and other opportunities.
  • Coordinate with JUS Official Services' internal teams to pursue appropriate opportunities.
  • Help clients evaluate opportunities based on long-term strategic value—not simply immediate money.
  • Assist with professional communications and negotiations within the manager's authorized scope.
  • Build relationships with brands, promoters, venues, creators, agencies, industry professionals, and other relevant parties.

Career Development

  • Help clients develop sustainable career pathways.
  • Identify potential revenue streams and monetization opportunities.
  • Assist clients in preparing for major career milestones.
  • Coordinate with internal specialists when clients require marketing, creative, booking, sponsorship, public relations, or other support.
  • Help clients move from where they are today toward where they ultimately want to be.

Internal Collaboration

JUS Official Services operates as an integrated ecosystem. Managers may collaborate with internal teams and specialists across areas including:

  • Marketing

  • Public Relations
  • Sponsorships & Brand Partnerships
