What is a Tableau Engineer?

A Tableau Engineer is a data professional who specializes in using Tableau, a leading data visualization and business intelligence tool, to create interactive dashboards and reports. They are responsible for connecting to various data sources, transforming raw data into meaningful insights, and presenting findings in a visually compelling way. Tableau Engineers often work closely with business stakeholders to understand requirements and ensure that the visualizations support data-driven decision-making. They may also optimize dashboard performance and ensure data accuracy and security.

How does a Tableau Engineer typically collaborate with data analysts and business stakeholders?

A Tableau Engineer often works closely with data analysts to understand reporting needs and ensure that data visualizations are both accurate and actionable. They translate business requirements into interactive dashboards, often holding regular meetings with stakeholders to gather feedback and iterate on solutions. Collaboration also involves troubleshooting data discrepancies, optimizing dashboard performance, and providing training or support to end users. This teamwork is critical for delivering insights that drive decision-making across departments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tableau Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tableau Engineer, you need strong data analysis skills, proficiency in SQL, and experience with Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server, often supported by a relevant degree in computer science or information systems. Familiarity with data warehousing concepts, ETL tools, and Tableau certification are typically expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you translate complex data into actionable insights for stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering accurate, visually engaging dashboards that drive informed business decisions.

What is the difference between Tableau Engineer vs Data Analyst?

Job description

Role                  :             Tableau Engineer

Location            :             Remote Role

Duration            :             9+ Months Contract

Role Responsibilities

Profile: Role should have good experience in Tableau reports development and setting up Tableau Online. As these reports are very critical for the company we are looking for a role expert who can confidently setup the Tableau online server, user groups , roles, deployment patterns with good knowledge of best practices in report development, testing , access management and report refresh scheduling. The role needs the person to migrate the existing Tableau Server reports to Tableau Online.
Profile
We're looking for a hands-on Tableau developer with strong report-building skills and excellent SQL ability. The ideal candidate thrives in designing clean, insightful dashboards from complex, multi-source data and is comfortable writing and optimizing SQL to shape that data before it reaches a dashboard. Comfort with agentic engineering practices and AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) to speed up coding, testing, and documentation is highly valued. Familiarity with Tableau Online/Server from a content-publishing perspective (not full admin ownership) is a plus.
What You'll Do

  • Design and build data-driven Tableau reports and dashboards from concept to deployment
  • Design and implement highly optimized Custom SQL queries to structure, aggregate, and blend complex data streams for enterprise-level reporting.
  • Deep understanding of Tableau's order of operations, including expert execution of extract, data source, context, and cascading filters.
  • Proven experience diagnosing slow workbooks and shifting heavy front-end filtering logic into parameterized database-level SQL.
  • Write, tune, and maintain SQL queries across multiple data sources (Data Lake, Redshift, SQL Server, Athena)
  • Combine and reshape data using cross-database joins and data blending to support reporting needs
  • Maintain and evolve reporting datasets — ensuring data stays accurate, current, and well-structured for downstream use
  • Focus on user-friendly, intuitive dashboard design and interface development
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data or report-level issues
  • Document report logic, data sources, and SQL transformations for maintainability
  • Contribute to a standard visualization style guide and reporting best practices
  • Develop Python scripts as needed for report automation (e.g., exporting dashboards as PDF/CSV)
  • Integrate Tableau reports with APIs or other tools (R, Python) for predictive/real-time reporting
  • Collaborate with AWS-based data teams (S3, Glue, Lambda) to source and prep report data
  • Apply agentic engineering practices and AI coding tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) to accelerate SQL development, report building, testing, and documentation
  • Use AI-assisted workflows to automate repetitive data-prep, QA, and refresh-scheduling tasks

About You

  • BA/BS required (analytical field preferred)
  • 5–10+ years of experience, with strong emphasis on SQL and Tableau report/dashboard development
  • Proven experience building reporting applications in a professional environment
  • Solid understanding of data modeling and relational/columnar databases
  • Tableau certification is a plus, but development skill is the priority
  • Comfortable using AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) and agentic engineering workflows to speed up development, testing, and documentation

More About You

  • Strong analytical thinking and structured problem-solving ability
  • Comfortable contributing to migration of existing Tableau reports to Tableau Online, from a report-development standpoint
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and assignments simultaneously in a cross-functional team environment
  • Versed in agile methodology and best practices
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills across diverse teams and disciplines
  • Self-starter, able to set priorities, work independently, and attain goals
