What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or engineering, along with expertise in systems architecture, troubleshooting, and integration. Familiarity with operating systems (like Linux and Windows), scripting languages, cloud platforms, and certifications such as CompTIA, AWS, or Microsoft Certified: Azure are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication, and collaboration skills help system engineers excel in cross-functional teams and resolve complex technical challenges. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure reliable, scalable, and secure IT infrastructure that meets organizational needs.

What are some common challenges faced by System Engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

System Engineers often collaborate with professionals from software development, hardware design, quality assurance, and project management. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication across these teams, as each may use different technical jargon and have distinct priorities. System Engineers must bridge these gaps, translating requirements and constraints to all stakeholders while balancing technical feasibility with project timelines. Developing strong interpersonal skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving can help overcome these challenges and lead to successful project outcomes.

What is system engineering?

System engineering is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on designing, integrating, and managing complex systems throughout their life cycles. It involves understanding and defining customer needs, translating them into system requirements, and creating solutions that span hardware, software, and processes. System engineers coordinate across various disciplines, ensuring that all parts of a project work together efficiently and effectively. Their work is crucial in industries such as aerospace, defense, IT, and manufacturing.

Job Description
GRC System Engineering Manager
Wilmington, DE
Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Remote
We are seeking a GRC System Engineering Manager to lead the design, development, deployment, and operation of an enterprise Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) technology platform. This role owns the GRC technology strategy and roadmap and is responsible for driving platform engineering, integrations, automation, and organizational rollout to ensure solutions are successfully adopted and embedded across the enterprise
This leader will combine hands-on engineering with technical and cross-functional leadership, partnering closely with IT, Security, Audit, Compliance and Business teams to deploy scalable, secure, and audit-ready solutions. The role plays a critical part in enabling global compliance, supporting technology audits, and meeting financial regulatory requirements.
Our mission is to make security and compliance a competitive advantage for CSC. We're looking for a technically confident leader who enjoys building platforms, driving adoption across complex organizations, and strengthening security culture through thoughtful engineering and automation.
Some of the things you'll be doing:
  • GRC Platform Engineering & Ownership: Lead the end-to-end design, engineering, deployment, and operation of the enterprise IT GRC platform, owning the full lifecycle from architecture through production adoption in partnership with business units, IT, Security, Audit, and Compliance teams.
  • Technology Strategy & Roadmap Execution: Define and execute a multi-year GRC technology strategy and roadmap, prioritizing automation, integration, scalability, and advanced reporting while coordinating phased rollouts aligned with business and regulatory objectives.
  • Control Frameworks & Data Architecture: Design, build, and maintain scalable control libraries and data models mapped to security frameworks, audit standards, and regulatory requirements across global jurisdictions, collaborating with control owners to ensure accurate implementation and consistent adoption.
  • Workflow & Analytics Engineering: Architect and deliver automated workflows, dashboards, and reporting solutions that are embedded into day-to-day GRC operations, improving audit readiness, visibility, and regulatory awareness across the organization
  • Enterprise Systems Integration & Deployment: Design and implement secure, scalable integrations between the GRC platform and enterprise systems, leading deployment efforts to streamline data flows, enforce controls, and reduce manual processes.
  • Technical Leadership & Cross-Functional Delivery: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of GRC engineers and analysts while providing hands-on technical guidance, setting engineering standards, and acting as the escalation point for complex platform and integration challenges.
  • Governance, Standards & Operational Excellence: Establish engineering standards, operating procedures, and governance practices that enable consistent deployment, onboarding, and long-term sustainability of the GRC platform across the enterprise

What technical skills, experience and qualifications do you need?
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information assurance, MIS or equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum 7+ years in global enterprise systems development, deployment and support. 3+ years in GRC, IT Risk, or Information Security preferred. Familiarity with Diligent One IT Risk Management platform is strongly preferred.
  • Designing and delivering data visualization and reporting solutions using BI tools such as AWS QuickSight and Microsoft Power BI, with strong SQL and data modeling skills.
  • Experience engineering and operating secure, API-based integrations with platforms such as ServiceNow and SailPoint to support control automation.
  • Designing and engineering custom automations for SaaS platforms, using Python to extend platform capabilities and enable advanced automation features.
  • Proven technical leadership in driving architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and delivering GRC platform solutions with measurable business impact, improving risk visibility, operational efficiency, and regulatory outcomes.
