What are some common challenges faced by System Engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

System Engineers often collaborate with professionals from software development, hardware design, quality assurance, and project management. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication across these teams, as each may use different technical jargon and have distinct priorities. System Engineers must bridge these gaps, translating requirements and constraints to all stakeholders while balancing technical feasibility with project timelines. Developing strong interpersonal skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving can help overcome these challenges and lead to successful project outcomes.

What is system engineering?

System engineering is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on designing, integrating, and managing complex systems throughout their life cycles. It involves understanding and defining customer needs, translating them into system requirements, and creating solutions that span hardware, software, and processes. System engineers coordinate across various disciplines, ensuring that all parts of a project work together efficiently and effectively. Their work is crucial in industries such as aerospace, defense, IT, and manufacturing.

What is the difference between System Engineering vs Network Engineering?

AspectSystem EngineeringNetwork Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like INCOSE, PMPBachelor's in Computer Science or related, Cisco certifications (CCNA, CCNP)
Work EnvironmentDesigning and integrating complex systems across industriesDesigning, implementing, and maintaining computer networks
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, defense, ITTelecommunications, IT services, enterprise networks
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for technical scope and certificationsFocuses on network infrastructure and security

System Engineering and Network Engineering share overlapping skills in technical certifications and work environments, but differ in focus. System Engineers design complex systems across various industries, while Network Engineers specialize in network infrastructure. Both roles are vital in technology and engineering sectors, often requiring similar credentials but serving distinct functions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or engineering, along with expertise in systems architecture, troubleshooting, and integration. Familiarity with operating systems (like Linux and Windows), scripting languages, cloud platforms, and certifications such as CompTIA, AWS, or Microsoft Certified: Azure are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication, and collaboration skills help system engineers excel in cross-functional teams and resolve complex technical challenges. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure reliable, scalable, and secure IT infrastructure that meets organizational needs.

Job description

Manager, Power Systems

Onsite: Houston, TX

We are seeking a hands-on Manager of Power Systems to lead our engineering team while remaining deeply engaged in technical execution. This is a player-coach roleโ€”ideal for a seasoned Power System Studies Engineer who thrives on both leading teams and solving complex technical challenges.

In this role, you will drive high-impact power system studies, mentor and develop engineers, and serve as a technical authority across projects. Youโ€™ll also work closely with the VP of Engineering, acting as a trusted partner in technical decision-making, project oversight, and ensuring engineering quality across the organization.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of power systems engineers, fostering a high-performance and collaborative culture
  • Act as a technical coach, providing guidance on complex studies, methodologies, and best practices
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and ongoing development of engineering staff

Technical Execution (Player Role)

  • Perform and lead power system studies including load flow, short-circuit, arc flash, protection coordination, and transient stability
  • Develop and review relay settings and protection schemes
  • Build, validate, and maintain system models using tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSCAD, or PowerFactory
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues related to reliability, protection, and performance

Executive Partnership & Technical Oversight

  • Partner closely with the VP of Engineering to support strategic initiatives, project prioritization, and technical standards
  • Act as a final technical authority on power system studies, ensuring accuracy, quality, and consistency across deliverables
  • Review, approve, and sign/seal engineering studies and reports in accordance with PE licensure requirements
  • Provide input on resource planning, project risk, and engineering best practices

Project & Client Leadership

  • Serve as the technical lead and escalation point across multiple projects
  • Manage project scope, timelines, and deliverables while ensuring engineering quality and consistency
  • Partner with clients, utilities, and internal stakeholders to deliver innovative, compliant solutions
  • Present technical findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences

Engineering Excellence

  • Ensure all studies and designs meet IEEE, NEC, NERC, ANSI, and other applicable standards
  • Drive continuous improvement in tools, processes, and engineering methodologies
  • Stay current with emerging technologies such as renewables, grid modernization, and energy storage

What You Bring

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering (Masterโ€™s preferred)
  • Active PE license required (ability to sign/seal engineering documents)
  • 7+ years of experience in power system studies and analysis
  • Proven experience balancing technical execution with leadership responsibilities
  • Strong expertise in tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSCAD, or PowerWorld
  • Deep knowledge of power systems analysis, protective relaying, and arc flash studies
  • Experience with utility, industrial, or large-scale power systems
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels

Nice to Have

  • Experience with renewable integration, microgrids, or energy storage systems
  • Prior experience in a lead or supervisory role
  • Industry certifications or advanced specialization in power systems

Why This Role

This is a unique opportunity to step into a leadership role without leaving the technical work behindโ€”while also playing a critical role in supporting executive engineering leadership and owning the final quality of deliverables through PE sign-off.
