Job description

Job Title: Fuel Handling Design Engineer
Location: Bellevue, Washington

Overview
Responsibilities
  • Design nuclear fuel handling systems and fuel handling equipment from requirements development through final design.
  • Coordinate and review inputs and requirements from engineering and project teams.
  • Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for system design activities and integration with overall plant design delivery schedules.
  • Identify and apply applicable design codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (as appropriate), such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, ASHRAE, IEEE, NFPA.
  • Interface with cross-functional design disciplines (mechanical, instrumentation & controls, civil, nuclear) to develop plant design information and define system design/performance criteria.
  • Create engineering 3D CAD models, assemblies, and drawings, including (as applicable) P&ID's, interface drawings, and manufacturing drawings, applying standards such as ASME Y14.1 and Y14.5.
  • Perform and/or review scoping analyses and calculations to evaluate design options.
  • Document engineering work through technical writing (system design descriptions, equipment design specifications, design reports, trade studies, calculations/analyses).
  • Present design results and support formal design reviews.
  • Review technical solutions provided by team members and subcontractors through participation in design reviews.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight of subcontractors; support on-time delivery of work products in coordination with contract administration.
  • Propose and initiate testing programs; support execution, evaluation, and reporting of results.
  • Support licensing-related activities and documentation (as applicable).
  • Promote continuous learning and apply industry best practices to maintain high-quality engineering design and identify improvement opportunities.

Requirements
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (Systems, Chemical, Nuclear considered with relevant experience).
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience designing complex mechanical systems, structures, and/or equipment.
  • 4+ years CAD proficiency required (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Strong technical writing, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to handle projects with competing objectives and design constraints, and resolve conflicts between objectives.
  • Self-starter with the ability to coordinate and lead design efforts with minimal direction.
  • High degree of trust and integrity; communicates openly and fosters teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (Section III or Section VIII).
  • Prior nuclear industry experience, including fuel handling systems (preferred, not required).
  • Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 and/or ISO 9001.
  • Experience in DFM/DFA.
  • Experience with GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Experience in finite element stress analysis and commercial mechanical analysis tools.

Physical requirements include sitting and/or standing for extended periods, bending/stooping, grasping/gripping, fine motor control, with minimal physical exertion, including the ability to safely lift up to 25 pounds. Work environment includes stairs, typing/keyboard activities, and standard workplace conditions exceeding 8 hours per day. Travel required: 5-10%.
