Sysml information

How does a SysML Modeler typically collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams during a project?

SysML Modelers work closely with systems engineers, hardware designers, software developers, and project managers to ensure the system's requirements and architecture are clearly communicated and understood. They facilitate model-based systems engineering (MBSE) by creating and maintaining SysML diagrams that serve as a common reference point for all stakeholders. Regular interactions include participating in design reviews, clarifying requirements, and updating models based on team feedback, which helps identify potential issues early in the development cycle. Effective collaboration skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into visual models are key to success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SysML Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SysML Modeler, you need strong systems engineering knowledge, experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies, and proficiency in SysML modeling, typically backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SysML modeling tools like MagicDraw, Cameo Systems Modeler, or Enterprise Architect, and relevant certifications such as OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP), are highly valued. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help translate complex technical requirements into clear system models and facilitate team collaboration. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately modeling complex systems, ensuring clear stakeholder communication, and supporting efficient system development and integration.

Will AI replace system engineers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace system engineers, as their role involves complex problem-solving, system integration, and decision-making that require human expertise. Instead, AI tools can augment their work by automating routine tasks and analyzing large data sets, allowing engineers to focus on design and strategic planning. Continuous learning and proficiency with modeling languages like SysML remain essential for system engineers to adapt to technological advancements.

Is SysML still used?

SysML (Systems Modeling Language) is still actively used in systems engineering for modeling complex systems, especially in industries like aerospace, defense, and automotive. Professionals often use SysML tools such as MagicDraw or Enterprise Architect and may hold certifications in model-based systems engineering (MBSE).

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced systems engineers, especially those in senior or executive roles in aerospace, defense, or technology industries, can earn $500,000 or more annually. These positions often require advanced certifications, specialized skills in SysML or systems modeling, and extensive industry experience.

What is SysML and what is it used for?

SysML, or Systems Modeling Language, is a general-purpose modeling language used to specify, analyze, design, and verify complex systems. It extends UML (Unified Modeling Language) to support systems engineering, enabling professionals to model hardware, software, data, processes, and personnel within a unified framework. SysML is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense to facilitate clear communication and collaboration among multidisciplinary teams. Its diagrams help represent system requirements, structure, behavior, and parametrics, making it easier to manage complexity and ensure system integrity throughout the lifecycle.

What industries use SysML?

SysML is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and systems engineering for modeling complex systems. Professionals working with SysML often collaborate with engineers and use modeling tools like MagicDraw or Enterprise Architect to develop system architectures and requirements.

Job Schedule: 9/80 - Employees work 9 out of every 14 days - totaling 80 hours worked - and have every other Friday off.

Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a Systems Engineer with 6 or more years of relevant experience to support the design, development, integration, test, and sustainment of advanced capabilities. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in systems engineering, practical domain experience, and the ability to lead technical work across cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.

This role requires hands-on experience in systems and system-level engineering activities, including requirements development, architecture definition, interface management, integration, verification, and technical analysis. Preferred candidates will also have direct experience applying Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using SysML v1.6 or later, with Cameo Systems Modeler experience strongly desired.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform system engineering activities for capabilities across requirements, architecture, integration, verification, and technical baseline management.
  • Work closely with customers and cross-functional engineering teams to design, develop, integrate, validate, and sustain new system functionality.
  • Develop and manage system-level requirements, interface definitions, ICDs, and support technical artifacts with clear traceability to customer needs and internal standards.
  • Conduct trade studies, technical analyses, and performance assessments to support system design decisions and risk reduction.
  • Support development and maintenance of system and MBSE artifacts that improve architecture definition, interface management, verification planning, and technical documentation.
  • Plan and execute integration and test activities across laboratory, ground, and flight environments, including anomaly resolution and corrective action verification.
  • Develop test plans and procedures for specialized equipment, including anechoic chambers, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers.
  • Contribute to IRAD, technical planning, schedules, and formal design reviews, including SRR, PDR, CDR, and TRR.
