What is a Synthesize Bio?

A Synthesize Bio typically refers to a professional who works in the field of synthetic biology, which combines biology, engineering, and computer science to design and construct new biological parts, devices, and systems. These experts may work on creating genetically modified organisms, developing new pharmaceuticals, or engineering microbes for industrial use. Their work often involves laboratory research, data analysis, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Synthetic biologists play a crucial role in advancing biotechnology and finding solutions to challenges in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.

What are some common challenges encountered by professionals working in a synthesize bio role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in a Synthesize Bio role often face challenges such as troubleshooting complex biochemical reactions, optimizing synthesis protocols for reproducibility, and keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams—including chemists, biologists, and data scientists—is crucial for overcoming technical obstacles and ensuring project success. Staying current through scientific journals, continuous training, and participating in team discussions can help address these challenges while fostering innovation and efficiency in the lab.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a synthesize bio, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Synthetic Biologist, you need a solid background in molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry, typically supported by an advanced degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with laboratory automation, gene editing tools like CRISPR, and bioinformatics software is commonly required. Critical thinking, creativity, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills for designing experiments and solving complex biological problems. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving innovation and ensuring the successful development of engineered biological systems.

What is the difference between Synthesize Bio vs Synthetic Biologist?

Job description

Executive Administrator

Seattle, Washington, United States

Variant Bio is developing life-saving therapies by studying the genes of people with exceptional health-related traits. By identifying communities with unique genetic architectures and outlier phenotypes, Variant Bio has identified novel human genetic evidence that is the basis for programs with breakthrough potential across multiple therapeutic areas. The company's research is powered by its proprietary Inference platform, which integrates across deep phenotyping and multi-omic data using statistical genetics and AI/ML approaches to identify and validate therapeutic targets. In addition, Variant Bio has established strategic partnerships with Novo Nordisk and Boehringer Ingelheim, validating the strength of the platform and enabling the advancement of novel therapeutic programs through world-class development expertise.

With ethics at its core, the company launched an unprecedented benefit-sharing program in 2020, in which it has pledged tangible benefits that directly impact the communities it partners with throughout the world.

About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and proactive Executive Administrator to serve as the right hand to our senior leadership team. This is a high-impact role suited for a seasoned professional who thrives in fast-moving, ambiguous environments — ideally with direct experience supporting C-suite executives at an early-stage biotech, life sciences, or venture-backed company. Given the dynamic nature of a startup environment, this role requires the ability to seamlessly handle a variety of responsibilities ranging from day-to-day office administration to interacting with investors and other key stakeholders with the highest level of professionalism and discretion.

Key Responsibilities

Executive Support & Calendaring

  • Own and actively manage complex, multi-time-zone calendars for multiple C-suite executives, exercising sound judgment on prioritization and scheduling conflicts.
  • Coordinate and prepare executives for internal and external meetings, board sessions, investor calls, and speaking engagements.
  • Draft, review, and manage high-stakes correspondence on behalf of leadership.
  • Anticipate executive needs and act with autonomy to keep priorities on track.

Operations & Project Management

  • Track and drive completion of key deliverables and action items across functions.
  • Manage special projects from inception through execution, often operating across teams and without direct authority.
  • Synthesize information and prepare briefing documents, executive summaries, and presentations.
  • Identify operational inefficiencies and implement scalable processes and systems.
  • Oversee day-to-day office operations, including ordering and maintaining office and kitchen supplies and ensuring shared spaces remain clean, organized, and well-stocked.

Stakeholder & Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships – internal and external – at all levels; represent leadership with professionalism and discretion.
  • Manage investor and board logistics and coordination for board meetings.

Travel, Events & Logistics

  • Plan and coordinate complex domestic and international travel arrangements, including itineraries, visas, and contingency planning.
  • Manage expense reporting and reconciliation with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Organize, manage, and execute company events including weekly team lunches, off-sites, and board meetings end-to-end.
Qualifications

Must Have...

  • 5+ years of experience supporting C-suite or senior executives (CEO, COO, CSO, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with high autonomy in fast-paced, resource-constrained environments.
  • Exceptional organizational skills; able to manage multiple priorities and shifting timelines.
  • Impeccable attention to detail; you catch what others miss – a typo in the board deck or missing information on a calendar invite – before anyone else does.
  • Strong instinct for anticipating problems before they surface: you think three steps ahead, identify risk early, and have a plan ready before anyone knows one was needed.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; polished and professional in all settings.
  • High emotional intelligence and sound judgment – you know when to act and when to ask.
  • Proficiency with modern productivity tools (Google Workspace, Slack, AI tools, etc.).
  • Track record of building trust quickly and maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to be onsite in the Seattle office five days a week.

Nice to Have...

  • Experience at an early-stage biotech, life sciences, or clinical-stage company.
  • Background supporting executives in a venture capital or private equity firm or VC-backed portfolio company.
  • Familiarity with board governance, investor relations, and fundraising processes.
  • Experience standing up administrative or operational functions from scratch in a scaling organization.
Compensation & Perks

At Variant Bio, we're building something meaningful and we believe supporting our people is essential to that mission. We offer a thoughtful and competitive set of benefits designed to support your health, growth, and life outside of work.

  • Competitive Compensation & Equity – Market-competitive salary with the opportunity to participate in company equity and share in our long-term success.
  • Comprehensive Health Benefits – Variant Bio covers 100% of employee premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance. Dependents may be added to the plan at an incremental cost.
  • Flexible Time Off – Flexible paid time off and company holidays, with an emphasis on trust and personal responsibility.
  • 401(k) Plan – Employer-sponsored retirement plan with company match.
  • Professional Growth – Support for learning and development.
  • Collaborative, Mission-Driven Culture – Work alongside a highly engaged, interdisciplinary team passionate about transforming human health through genetics.
  • Early-Stage Impact – A chance to make a meaningful contribution at a growing biotech where your work has visible impact.

Anticipated annual base salary for this position is $100,000 - $125,000 plus up to 10% bonus and an options package, for total compensation of up $110,000 - $137,500, plus equity options. The annual salary range above is based on the responsibilities and qualifications listed above. Individual salary will depend on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Don't meet every single requirement but are excited to join the Variant Bio team? If your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may still be the right candidate for this or other roles.
