What is a Synon job?

A Synon job typically involves working with Synon/2E, a CA Technologies tool used for model-based development on IBM i (AS/400) systems. Synon developers design, generate, and maintain applications using a high-level, template-driven programming environment. These roles are common in industries relying on legacy systems, such as finance and manufacturing. Knowledge of RPG, COBOL, and database management is often required.

What typical projects or tasks does a Synon Developer work on within an organization?

As a Synon Developer, you’ll often work on projects involving the development, maintenance, and modernization of business applications built on IBM iSeries (AS/400) platforms. Your daily responsibilities might include analyzing business requirements, designing or modifying Synon-generated code, troubleshooting system issues, and collaborating with analysts, testers, and end users to implement solutions. You may also participate in migration projects to help companies update or integrate legacy systems with newer technologies. This role provides exposure to both technical challenges and collaborative teamwork, making it ideal for professionals who enjoy solving complex problems and supporting mission-critical applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Synon position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Synon Developer, you need strong experience in Synon (also known as COOL:2E), IBM iSeries (AS/400) systems, and a background in software development or computer science. Familiarity with Synon CASE tools, SQL, RPGLE, and related development environments is crucial, as are any certifications in IBM technologies. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help Synon Developers effectively interpret business requirements and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure accurate legacy system maintenance, smooth program enhancements, and reliable support for critical business operations.
