Job Duties
SWVMHI has four Unit Nurse Coordinator (UNC) positions: one each for the two parts of Acute Admission Unit (AB and CD total census is 71), one for Geriatric Unit (EF census 41), and one for Extended Rehabilitation Services (HIJ census 63). Approximate numbers of nursing employees on each unit average between 70 and 100 fulltime positions.
UNCs are expert Psychiatric Nurses, Managers, and Leaders responsible to ensure quality nursing care is provided on an identified unit 24 hours a day/7 day a week to clients on the road to recovery from mental illness by:
โ€ข Providing management and leadership to all levels and all shifts of unit-based nursing
staff members who provide nursing care in a safe, secure, and therapeutic
environment for both forensic and non-forensic adult and/or geriatric clients with
mental illness as a primary diagnosis.
โ€ข Collaborating assertively as part of an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental team to
provide, observe, communicate, and encourage interventions, treatments, and
behaviors that promote holistic well-being and achieves satisfactory results.
โ€ข Ensuring the Nursing Process is integrated within the Comprehensive Treatment Plan
and carried out according to professional nursing standards through effective
collaboration between nursing roles, facility shifts, departments, and disciplines,
promoting recovery concepts.
โ€ข Creating and role modeling healthy interpersonal interactions with staff and clients.
โ€ข Overseeing that medication administration and treatments are done according to
standards, client/family and education are carried out, and leadership is provided
during interventions for emergency situations.
โ€ข Ensuring fiscally responsible work schedules for unit/shift based direct care staff and
that short term staffing needs are met by effective nursing recruitment, retention, and
creative use of resources.
โ€ข Collaborating with Unit Program Director, Nursing Administration, and Fiscal
Department to oversee unit budget.
โ€ข Coordinating unit and department-based performance improvement activities and
staff education meet TJC and CMS accreditation and that other regulatory/oversight
agency standards are met.
โ€ข Covering on an occasional basis for the Chief Nurse Officer or Assistant Nurse
Executive.
โ€ข Directly supervising and documenting the performance of an assigned group of about
5-10 staff members which includes Head Nurses and possibly Team Nurses, Ward
Clerk CNAs, and/or Lead CNAs.
Minimum Qualifications
โ€ข Must be a Licensed Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or applicant status
Additional Considerations
โ€ข Prefer significant experience in an inpatient treatment setting related to adult mental
health.
โ€ข Strongly prefer significant experience in middle management with supervision of
various levels of nursing staff.
โ€ข Computer skills are needed.
