The Role and Why It's Important

Our Sweet Shop Clerks bring a little joy to every customer who walks through the bakery. In this role, you'll help keep our Sweet Shop stocked with fresh, beautifully presented products while delivering the kind of friendly, attentive service that keeps customers coming back. If you enjoy working with food, take pride in a well-run department, and love making people smile, we'd love to have you on our team.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction a positive one

  • Take customer orders at the bakery counter and answer questions about products with enthusiasm and product knowledge

  • Review daily orders, anticipate product needs, and prepare, finish, and replenish product as necessary

  • Pull product from the cooler or freezer to prepare for baking and ensure an adequate food supply is ready and on hand

  • Review the status and appearance of food for freshness and maintain a clean, sanitary work area at all times

  • Check in product, put product away, and review invoices as needed

  • Run the department register, receive payment, and make change where applicable

  • Remove trash in a timely manner and wash dishes as necessary

  • Price and order product and deliver orders as needed

  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment

  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables

  • Perform simple addition and subtraction, copy figures, and count and record accurately

  • Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing

  • Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home; Bakery Department Manager; Assistant Bakery Department Manager

Education and Experience

  • No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-paced role in a bakery environment where you will be on your feet throughout your shift. You will have exposure to flour dust, noise, temperature extremes, and cleaning chemicals or solvents, with occasional potential for electrical hazards. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.

The anticipated hourly starting wage for this position is $13.00 to $16.25 depending on experience.
