Job description

Columbus Academy seeks two part-time String Teachers to begin responsibilities on August 6, 2026.
Columbus Academy seeks two outstanding and collaborative part-time string teachers to join a growing and well-established orchestra program serving students in grades 3-12. The string program is an important part of the school's performing arts offerings and emphasizes strong technical foundations, musical independence and meaningful ensemble experiences for student musicians. Working closely with the Director of Orchestras and performing arts faculty, successful candidates will teach group string classes, lead ensemble sectionals and contribute to curriculum development, student assessment and the continued expansion of chamber music opportunities for students. Additional responsibilities may include rehearsal leadership and occasional conducting.
Position Overview
Two part-time positions are available:
โ€ข Morning Position - instruction primarily with students in grades 5-12.
โ€ข Afternoon Position - instruction with grades 3-4 (Suzuki-style group classes) and grades 6-12
Both positions work collaboratively with the Director of Orchestras and Performing Arts faculty to support the continued growth of the school's string program.
Primary Responsibilities
โ€ข Teach group string classes across multiple grade levels as assigned
โ€ข Lead sectional rehearsals for orchestra ensembles
โ€ข Support the development and implementation of curriculum aligned with program goals
โ€ข Assist with the design, administration and evaluation of student assessments
โ€ข Contribute to the development of a chamber music program for student musicians
โ€ข Maintain a structured and positive classroom environment through strong classroom management practices
โ€ข Collaborate with performing arts faculty on concerts, rehearsals and program initiatives
โ€ข Assist with rehearsal leadership and conducting when appropriate
โ€ข Participate in performances, rehearsals and occasional program events
Instructional Approach
The program emphasizes strong technical foundations, musical independence and ensemble collaboration. The afternoon position includes teaching grades 3-4 group classes in a Suzuki-style format, utilizing pedagogical principles associated with Mimi Zweig and Brenda Brenner including modeling, repetition, listening-based learning and collaborative music-making.
Qualifications
โ€ข Bachelor of Music Education (string emphasis) or equivalent degree required
โ€ข Primary string instrument background preferred
โ€ข Low-string specialization (cello or double bass) strongly preferred
โ€ข Experience teaching elementary through high school string students preferred
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students across a wide range of developmental levels
โ€ข Strong classroom management and organizational skills
โ€ข Basic piano proficiency to support rehearsals and instruction
โ€ข Experience with Suzuki or similar group-based pedagogy is beneficial, particularly for the afternoon position
